MBB Preview: Seniors to be honored at final home game Saturday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES:  The Blue Devils (13-11, 4-9 WIAC) will close out the regular season by hosting UW-Oshkosh (15-9, 8-5 WIAC), Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. in Senior Day. The Blue Devils have earned a spot in the WIAC Tournament and are currently the sixth seed. The Titans are currently tied for second place. Seeding will be clear after this weekend.  The Blue Devils will honor seniors Brett Ahsenmacher, John Lahti and Jacob Nordstrom following the Oshkosh game.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • John Keefe leads the Blue Devils in five separate categories, including: points per game (15.2), rebounds per game (6.2), assists per game (4.6), free throw percentage (72-85, .847) and minutes per game (35.6). Keefe is fifth in the WIAC in scoring, fourth in rebounds and first in assists.
  • John Lahti has scored in double digits in the last four games. He's upped his average to second best on the team with 10.2 points per game, and 14.0 ppg over the last four games, the best on the team over that four game stretch.
  • Jacob Nordstrom is 11th in the league in rebounds (4.8), while Lahti is 20th (3.8).  The pair are in the top 10 in the league in blocked shots, with Nordstrom second (0.96) and Lahti fifth (0.83). 
  • The Blue Devils are averaging 69.7 points per game and giving up 73.0 points.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
  • After UW-Stout's Jacob Nordstrom tied the score at 10 apiece in the first half, UW-La Crosse went off on a 17-4 run over the next five minutes and the Eagles went on to a 77-52 win Wednesday at Mitchell Hall.
  • The Blue Devils trailed 44-21 at halftime and played relatively even with the Eagles in the second half.  Stout got as close as 17 points after the break.
  • John Lahti had another big night at the net for the Blue Devils, dropping 18 points. John Keefe added 10 points for Stout.
  • The Blue Devils have lost four straight in conference play. Suffering two home losses in their last two contests. First, coming against seventh ranked River Falls and then to Stevens Point.
  • Against River Falls, the Blue Devils couldn't escape the Falcons lead heading into the second half. John Lahti led with 11 points.
  • Stout got to within one point with about eight minutes left in the second half against the Pointers, but fell short while Stevens Point shot lights out from the three point line. John Keefe led the team with 15 points and eight boards.


CAREER BESTS
  • The Blue Devils have tallied a number of individual team best scoring this year.
  • John Keefe went off for 32 points against Superior
  • Cory Speer lit up Buena Vista for 31.
  • Sam Ortmann scored a best 14 points against Buena Vista, then topped that with a 16 points effort against Bethany Lutheran.
  • Keegan Dickson scored 20 points and Jacob Nordstrom has matched a career high by scoring 10 three times this season.
  • Isaac Elliot tallied 19 points against Robert Morris, 17 in the first half.
  • John Lahti opened the season with a career-best 17 points against UM-Crookston.
  • Sophomore transfer Braden Walbeck ran his career-best up the ladder throughout the season and scored 17 against Dubuque.
  • The 95 team points scored by Stout against UW-Superior was the most by a Blue Devil team since downing Bethel University 95-60, to open the 2010-11 season.
  • The Blue Devils are ranked fourth in the WIAC in scoring. Stout is third in assists (13.33) and fourth in steals (6.60). Stout has a turnover margin of plus-3.07, and leads the league in assists/turnover ration (1.37).
  • Stout is outscoring their opponents, 74.9-69.5.

THE WIAC
  • While the WIAC is always competitive, could the WIAC be stronger this year than in the past? If the non-conference records from the last two years have anything to say about it, that could prove true.
  • Last season, the eight WIAC teams had a combined 52-36 non-conference record (not counting post season games). This year, the non-conference record is 68-19. Six of the eight schools have an improved record heading into the conference schedule.
  • Stevens Point is the only team to have fewer wins than last year, while Oshkosh has matched their record from a year ago at this point.
  • In the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, River Falls is ranked at no. 5, followed by Whitewater at no. 18.
  • In the WIAC preseason poll, Oshkosh was picked to finish first, followed by La Crosse, Whitewater, Eau Claire, River Falls, Stevens Point, Platteville and Stout.

SCOUTING UW-LA CROSSE
  • La Crosse sits tied with Stout with a 4-8 conference record on the season.
  • The Eagles score as a committee, three players averaging double-digits, and five players averaging better than 7.0 ppg. 
  • Zach Schradle leads the conference in rebounding by almost three per game. He is 64th in the nation overall in rebounds per game.
  • Statistics

EAGLES LAST TIME OUT
  • The Eagles fell to the Blugolds on the road in their last contest.
  • Trailing 48-41 with 18:01 left in the second half, UWL used a 10-5 run to cut the lead to 53-51 with 14:02 remaining on a Meinholz three-point field goal.
  • UW-Eau Claire went on an 12-1 run to take a 65-52 advantage with 8:55 remaining and UWL could get no closer than 11 points the rest of the game. 
  • Eau Claire won 88-68. Shooting over 60 percent from the field in the game.

LAST TIME STOUT AND LA CROSSE MET
  • In their only fourth WIAC contest at the time, Stout took a 65-60 win on Dewy Mintz Court in the teams' last battle.
  • In a good defensive battle from both teams, Stout got the upper hand, shooting 42.2 percent from the field and hold the Eagles to 41.1 percent from the field.
  • Jacob Nordstrom but in a good game for the Blue Devils, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the win.

SCOUTING UW-OSHKOSH
  • Ben Boots leads the Titans in scoring with 13.5 points, followed by Charlie Noone with 13.0 and Brett Wittchow with 10.6. Max Schebel is tops in rebounds with 5.7 per contest.
  • The Titans are 20th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 65.3 ppg and 15th in the nation in free throw percentage sinking free throws 74.8 percent of the time.
  • The Titans are first in the league with fewest rebounds allowed with 29.9. The Titans pull down 34.2 rebounds per contest.
  • Oshkosh is averaging 69.8 points and giving up 65.3.

TITANS LAST TIME OUT
  • Charlie Noone scored 19 points and Adam Fravert added a career-high 13 off the bench to lead the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team to a 67-63 win at nationally ranked UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Feb. 15).
  • With the victory, UW-Oshkosh moves into a tie for second in the league standings with UW-Whitewater and UW-Eau Claire with one game remaining. UW-Whitewater is ranked 17th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com.
  • The Titans can clinch the second seed and a first-round bye in next week's WIAC Championship with a victory at UW-Stout
  • Oshkosh won in their final regular season home game against Platteville last week, winning 77-69. 
  • Boots scored 21 in the win, and the bench provided 52 total points.
  • A 3-pointer by Kramper pulled the Pioneers within 65-59 with just over three minutes to play, but Noone answered with a 3-pointer on the next Titan possession, and UW-Oshkosh held a lead of at least seven points the rest of the way.

LAST TIME STOUT AND OSHKOSH MET
  • UW-Stout had four players in double figures, led by John Lahti's career-best 20 points, as the Blue Devils extended their winning streak to seven by downing UW-Oshkosh, 74-67, Jan. 7 at Kolf Sports Center.
  • Lahti was 8-for-9 from field goal range and was perfect at the free throw line on all four attempts. John Keefe tossed in 18 points, Cory Speer 17, and Jacob Nordstrom 10, including the final two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
  • The Blue Devils were perfect from the line, hitting all 15 of their free throw attempts, matching a feat of perfection that has happened only four times before, twice against UW-Oshkosh. Stout was 11-11 against the Titans in 2005 and 10-10 in 2003. Stout was 16-16 against UW-La Crosse in 2003 and 13-13 against UW-Superior in 2004.
  • Brett Wittchow led the Titans with 19 points. Charlie Noone contributed 11. The Blue Devils held Ben Boots to less than half of his game average. Boots was averaging 14.6 points, but was held to seven.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Cory Speer was selected as the UW-Stout/DigiCopy Athlete of the Week, Jan. 10, after coming off the bench against UW-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh...John Keefe was selected WIAC Athlete of the Week, Nov. 29, after scoring 32 points against UW-Superior and 15 against Buena Vista University...John Keefe was selected as the UW-Stout/DigiCopy Athlete of the Week, Nov. 20, after his performance over the first three games of the season.

BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.




UW-STOUT COACH EDDIE ANDRIST
  • Eddie Andrist (203-298 at Stout, 453-421 overall) is in his 17th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 28th overall in the collegiate ranks.
  • Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance five seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round.
  • Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships.
  • Andrist spent two stints as a UW-Stout assistant, first as a student coach in the 1970s, then again during the 1980s.
  • Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar

UW-LA CROSSE COACH KEN KOELBL
  • Ken Koebl is in his 14th season as head men's basketball coach at UW-La Crosse in 2016-17.  He has led the Eagles to eight overall winning seasons in the last 11 years. 
  • Koelbl was named the 2015-16 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Coach of the Year after leading UWL to its 12th regular-season conference title in school history and first since 1965.  The Eagles finished 16-10 overall and 10-4 in the WIAC in 2015-16, advancing to the WIAC Tournament Semifinals for the fifth time (2006, 2007, 2012, 2014, 2016) under Koelbl.  

UW-OSHKOSH COACH PAT JUCKEM
  • Pat Juckem (yuck-um) is entering his fifth season as head coach of the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball program.
  • Juckem owns a 53-54 record and one NCAA Division III Championship appearance during his four seasons at UW-Oshkosh. He has also helped two Titan players garner a total of three All-WIAC first team honors.


CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. Oshkosh was picked to win the league, followed by La Crosse, Whitewater, Eau Claire, River Falls, Stevens Point, Platteville and Stout.


DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
