MENOMONIE (February 11, 2017) - UW-Stout fell into an early 10 point hole that they couldn't escape as UW-Stevens Point took a road victory, 76-64, in Johnson Fieldhouse on Alumni Day. The Blue Devils were led by
John Keefe who scored all 15 of his points in the second half.
The Blue Devils (13-10, 4-8 WIAC) found themselves down 16-8 after
Sam Ortmann scooted to the basket for a layup. But the Pointers (12-10, 6-6 WIAC) kept finding ways to score. A Stout score would come after a Stevens Point score, and a Stout stop would come after a Stevens Point stop. neither team able to either shorten the deficit and take the lead, or to gain one.
Stout was resilient in the first half, down by nine at the buzzer. 35-26.
The Blue Devils found life in the second, going on a few key runs to bring the game within one point after Jacob Nordstom scored on a layup assisted by Ortmann. But the Pointers rallied back, scoring seven unanswered, eventually stretching their lead to 12 to win the game, 76-64.
The Blue Devils got scoring from just about everyone.
Brett Ahsenmacher, unlike Keefe, scored all 10 of his points in the first half.
John Lahti scored 13 on 5-of-6 shooting, Nordstrom pored in 12, and Ortmann added eight.
The Pointers were led by Mark Nelson who scored a game high 16, and Drew Fredrickson who hit 5-of-5 3-pointers totaling 15 points.
Stout will be on the road Wednesday, Feb. 15 when they travel to UW-La Crosse, then return to Johnson Fieldhouse Saturday, Feb. 18 to close out the regular season with Senior Day and by taking on UW-Oshkosh.
