MENOMONIE (February 10, 2017) - UW-Stout scored three goals in the third period, but the rally fell short as the Blue Devils were topped by fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point 7-4 Friday at the Fanetti Community Center.

The Pointers (17-4-3, 6-1-0 WIAC) wasted absolutely no time taking a lead in this game as Larence Cornellius scored only 36 second into the game. Stevens Point added another goal, by Kelly O'Brien, midway through the first to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Stout (10-12-2, 2-5-0 WIAC) came out of the locker room to quickly score as Gavin Smith scored his second goal of the season, getting an assist from Colton Brausen and Riley Colvard.

But the Pointers piled up the goals, adding three more goals in the second to put Stout behind the eight-ball, 5-1.

Colvard would respond for the Blue Devils, scoring two goals in the third period. Colvard, with an assist by Shayne McLaughlin, cut into the lead two minutes into the third period, to pull Stout to within 5-2. Three minutes later, Jacob Barber returned the game to a four goal difference.

Colvard snagged his second goal of the game, getting assists by Smith and Brausen, at 10:05 to get to within 6-3. The Blue Devils got to within striking range when Justin Moody went top shelf with less than three minutes remaining, getting an assist from Karl Andersen.

The Blue Devils put an extra attacker on the ice moments later and eventually the Pointers found the empty net for the final 7-4 score.

Neither team pulled off a power play goal. Stevens Point went 0-3 and Stout went 0-5.

The Pointers out shot Stout 34-29.

Colvard scored two goals and an assist, the first time in his collegiate career he has scored two goals in a single game.

Stout will close out the regular season, Saturday, Feb. 11 when they host UW-River Falls at 7:30 p.m. Stout will host UW-Superior, Feb. 17-18 in a first round WIAC Tournament game.
