Freshman Duty leads Stout to tournament-opening win over Marian

MENOMONIE (November 17, 2017) - Freshman Joe Duty led four UW-Stout players in double figures, scoring 21 points, as the Blue Devils defeated Marian University, 84-77, Friday in the opening round of the UW-Stout Tip-Off Tournament.

The Blue Devils (2-0) will play Colorado College in the tournament's championship game, Saturday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. The Tigers defeated UW-Superior, 60-48, in the tournament's opening game. Marian and Superior will square off at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Duty scored 13 points in the first half and junior Zach Dahl contributed 10 of his 15 career-high points in the first half as Stout took a 45-32 halftime lead.

But the Sabres (0-1) cut into the lead in the second half, getting as close as one points with six minutes left in the game. Trentin Fouse scored 16 of his team-high 18 points in the second half and Taylor Rahn scored nine of his 12 points after the break.

Isaac Elliott matched Dahl's 15 points and transfer Brandon Emery had his second consecutive double-digit scoring night, dropping in 13 points.

Duty was 7-of-9 from the floor with one 3-pointer. He completed 6-of-8 free throws.  Dahl was 7-of-8 from the floor. Both Duty and Dahl had six rebounds. As a team, Stout shot 61.2 percent (30-49) from the floor and were 5-11 from free throw range and drained 19-of-27 free throws.

Will Polczynski added 14 points and recorded eight rebounds for the Sabres. Marian was 26-62 (41.9 percent) from the floor, 10-28 from beyond the arc and 15-20 from the line.

In Colorado's win over Superior, CooXooEii Black led all scorers with 22 points. Teammate Bobby Roth added 11 points. Shaq Coleman led Superior with 20 points and Colton Williams had 11.
