Senior Day
MENOMONIE (November 11, 2017) - UW-Stout stopped third-ranked UW-Oshkosh the first three times the Titans had the ball, including a goal-line stop in the opening stanza. But the Titans scored 21 points in the second quarter and went on to a 31-0 win to earn the undisputed WIAC title Saturday at Don and Nona Williams.
The Titans (9-0, 7-0 WIAC) had earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament last week, but needed to down the Blue Devils to assure the title would be their's only. And they played like they wanted it in the second quarter.
Stout (5-4, 3-4 WIAC) forced the Titans to punt on their first drive of the game, then stopped them four times from inside the 10-yard line on their next drive. The Titans three times tried to rush standout running back Dylan Hecker, who had been out the last several games to injury, but the senior back was stood up at the 2- and the 1-yard lines to turn the ball over on downs. Stout forced the Titans to punt again on their third drive of the quarter.
The Titans wasted little time in the second period. Oshkosh used an eight-play, 52-yard drive and Hecker carried the ball in from the 1-yard line at 13:37 of the second period. Stout had a 3-and-out, and the Titans took the punt at the Oshkosh 48. Four plays later, quarterback Brett Kasper found Sam Mentkowski alone on the end zone for a 39-yard score at 9:38 and a 14-0 lead.
The Titans ran out to a 21-0 lead when they took advantage of an interception late in the second period. Kasper hit Jacob Grant in the end zone for 21-yard TD with five second remaining.
Oshkosh's Turner Geisthardt booted a 43-yard field goal at 5:16 of the third period and Mitch Gerhartz ran 30 yards for the score at 9:34 of the fourth quarter for the final score.
Stout did not get into Oshkosh territory until late in the third period, when they got to the Oshkosh 41, where the Blue Devils allowed a fourth down sack. Stout ventured into Oshkosh territory on their first drive of the fourth quarter, but a penalty pushed them back to the 50 and were forced to punt. Stout would twice more get onto Oshkosh's side, but never deeper than the Oshkosh 40.
The Titans rolled up 396 total yards, the most Stout has allowed this season. Kasper was 18-of-24 for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Mentkowski had seven receptions for 104 yards. Oshkosh finished with 197 yards. Gerhartz ran the ball 15 times for 96 yards. Hecker, who took several direct snaps, ran 15 times for 56 yards.
The Blue Devils totaled 207 yards of offense, 161 in the air, 46 on the ground. Stout quarterback
Jay Alston was 15-of-38 for 161 yards, but was intercepted twice. Alston connected with
Brian Sandifer five times for 56 yards. While Alston gained 38 yards on the ground, he was sacked four times for losses of 37 yards for a net of one yard.
Lucian Coutier led the Blue Devils with 34 net yards.
Linebacker
Josh Johnson had 11 tackles, eight solo, to lead Stout. Cornerback
Enzo Rosani had 10 tackles, four solo.
The Titans will find out Sunday afternoon who they will play in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
