WHITEWATER (October 7, 2017) - Two glaring statistics jump out in an otherwise even looking box score - turnovers and points.

UW-Whitewater (2-3, 1-1 WIAC) held 23rd-ranked UW-Stout scoreless for the first time in two years in a 14-0 win Saturday at Warhawk Stadium and the Warhawks racked up three takeaways to none for the Blue Devils (2-2, 0-2 WIAC).

Whitewater scored twice in the first half - once in each quarter - and that would prove to be enough. The Warhawks also recovered two fumbles and recorded one interception. For the second consecutive week, Stout had no takeaways after recording six in their first two games of the season.

The statistics were almost dead-even, with both teams finishing the game with 221 total yards, Stout on 68 plays, Whitewater on 65 plays. The Blue Devils recorded 72 rushing yards and 149 passing yards, while the Warhawks had 80 rushing yards and 141 passing yards.

Both of Whitewater's scoring drives were short. The Warhawks, playing their first home game of the season, scored at 3:26 of the period when Cole Wilber hit Tony Gumina for a 28-yard pass play to complete a four-play, 42-yard drive. Scoring for the day was completed at 11:18 of the second quarter, a five-play, 44-yard drive that was set up by a Stout fumble capped off by a 20-yard pass from Wilber to Marcus Hudson.

Starting field position hurt the Blue Devils throughout the day. The Blue Devils averaged starting on their own 18-yard line, while the Warhawks' starting field position was almost 25 yards better, starting on average on their own 42-yard line.

The Blue Devils a promising drive cut short in the third quarter. Starting on their own 20-yard line, Stout put together an impressive 12-play, 69-yard. 6-minute, 50-second drive where Rayshawn Graham carried the ball the first six plays of the drive for 49 yards, the Blue Devils fumbled the ball away on the Whitewater 11. The drive was Stoutl's lone trip into the red zone.

Stout turned the ball over twice on downs in the fourth quarter.

With the exception of the two first half scores, the Blue Devil defense had a solid day, forcing the Warhawks to punt 10 times. But the Warhawks were able to capitalize on a steady wind, averaging 40.1 yards per punt, including a 74-yard bomb.

The Blue Devils recorded four sacks for 38 total yards. Isaiah Hardy, Aaron Wisecup, Luke Wilz and Iyen Ogbomoh each had a sack.

Linebacker Nick Schulenburg, playing near his hometown of Fort Atkinson, finished with 11 tackles, six solo. Safety Tony Blair had 10 tackles, seven solo.

Offensively, Stout quarterbacks were sacked seven times. Jay Alston completed 12-of-23 times for 142 yards, with Akema Collins pulling in three catches for 50 yards. Brian Sandifer had four catches for 19 yards. Graham finished with 61 rushing yards on 14 carries.

For the Warhawks, Wilber was 11-for-24 for 141 yards and two TD passes. Hudson had three catches for 35 yards and Gumina two catches for 32 yards. Drew Patterson led the Warhawks' ground game, carrying the ball 28 times for 110 yards.

Stout returns home to begin a two-game homestand this week when they host UW-RIver Falls, Saturday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. for homecoming. Stout will host UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Oct. 21.
