MENOMONIE (October 13, 2017) - UW-Stout took No. 9 UW-Whitewater to the edge before bowing out to the Warhawks in an emotional, hard-hitting five set contest at Johnson Fieldhouse Friday.
The Blue Devils (7-16, 2-3 WIAC) captured the first two sets, 25-23, 26-24, but Whitewater (16-3, 5-0 WIAC) came soaring back to take the final three sets, 25-20, 25-21, 16-14.
Even though the Warhawks turned the tables on the Blue Devils in sets three and four, Stout refused to give up. After the teams were knotted up at 8-8 in the fifth set, Whitewater jumped out to a 14-9. Stout tied the score.
An unforced error by Whitewater made it 14-10.
Emili Cain smashed a kill to make it 14-11 and
Emily Bialka and
Kennedy Strain combined for a block to pull Stout to within two, 14-12. Bialka followed up with a kill and Cain and Strain went up for a block to tie the score at 14-14.
The Warhawks' Rachel Butterfield put her team up by one with a kill, then combined with Courtney Wagner for the match-winning block. Butterfield led the way with 20 kills as the Warhawks had five players with 11 or more kills. Amanda Spera finished with15, Sydney Rackey 14, Wagner 13 and Kelley Berk 11.
Freshman Amber Riley led Stout with 17 kills. Senior
Ashley Pratt finished with 15 kills and Cain tallied 14.
Both teams notched 20 assisted blocks. Wagner combined for seven and Spera had four. Strain led Stout with six. Cain and Pratt each had four.
The Blue Devils return to action Saturday, Oct. 14 when they play at Hamline University at 10:30 a.m.
