MENOMONIE (January 27, 2017) - UW-Stout came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the third period, then fought off a power play, only to see UW-Superior score four seconds after the power play ended. The Yellowjackets added one more goal and carried a 4-2 victory out of the Fanetti Community Center Friday.
Superior (7-12-1, 1-2-0 WIAC) got on the board in the first period on a marker by Jordan Neduzak at 6:48 of the second, then took a two goal lead on Anton Svensson's first goal of the night, this one coming at 12:13 in the first.
The Blue Devils (10-9-2, 2-2-0 WIAC) found the back of the net amidst a flurry of activity in the second period. Outshooting the Yellowjackets 20-5 in the second period,
Mathias Ahman scored at 16:21 of the second, taking an assist from
Justin Moody.
The Blue Devils' leading scorer,
Riley Colvard, knotted the score at 3:18 in the third period, with assists from
Colton Brausen and
Adam Kresl.
But then came disappointment for the Blue Devils as the Yellowjackets launched a third period attack, outshooting Stout 15-8 in the final stanza.
Tommi Ahlgren kept the swarming Yellowjackets out of the net, making 13 third period saves. The Blue Devils looked like they were going to get out of their final penalty of the evening unscathed, but only four seconds after Stout was announced as being at full-strenght, Svensson scored his second goal of the night.
The Blue Devils put an extra attacker on the ice with just over a minute remaining. But the Yellowjackets knocked the puck high and into Stout's zone where Svensson fought off a lone Stout defender to score an empty net and notch a hat trick.
At one point in the third period, Stout held a 2 to 1 advantage in shots, but the pulled it much closer with their late third period flurry. Stout finished with a 38-28 advantage, with Ahlgren making 24 saves. The 'Jackets Kyle Miller recorded 36 saves.
The loss took away Stout's opportunity to move into a tie for first place with UW-Stevens Point. For the Yellowjackets, it was their first conference win.
Stout will be at Stevens Point, Thursday, Feb. 2, then will be at UW-River Falls, Friday, Feb. 3.
