WHITEWATER (January 21, 2017) - UW-Stout bounced back from an early deficit to pull to within striking range, but could not hold off UW-Whitewater as the 25th ranked Warhawks took a 65-51 win over the Blue Devils Saturday at Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Warhawks used the 3-ball to their advantage throughout the game and especially early, hitting 3-pointers on their first two possessions. Whitewater (14-3, 3-3 WIAC) built up an 11 point, 21-10 lead before Stout made a move to pull to within four points.
Stout (12-5, 3-3 WIAC) pulled to within 21-16 on a layup by
Sam Ortmann, two free throws by
John Lahti and a layup by Lahti. A 3-pointer by the Warhawks' Demetrius Woodley stretched the lead back to eight points.
John Keefe cut the score two six and two free throws by
Brett Ahsenmacher made it 24-20 in favor of Whitewater, but that would be as close as Stout would get until late in the second half.
The Warhawks took a 35-22 halftime lead, hitting 8-of-16 3-point shots before intermission They would add four more in the second half and held a lead of as much as 15 points four minutes in the second half.
Stout slowly whittled away at the lead. Ortmann scored 10 second half points, hitting a 3-pointer at 6:13 to cut the lead to 53-47. Two free throws by Ahsenmacher brought the score to four points with 5:40 remaining in the game. The Warhawks would finish the game outscoring Stout 12-2 the rest of the way.
The Warhawks were led by Chris Jones with 22. Jones scored 18 in the first half, hitting all four of his first half 3-pointers before the break. Scotty Tyler added 13 and Demetrius Woodley and Derek Rongstad each scored 11.
Ortmann and Lahti each scored 12 to lead Stout. Ahsenmacher finished with 11. Lahti finished the day with four blocked shots.
Stout shot 34.5 percent (19-55) from the field, 21.4 percent (3-14) from 3-point range and 83.3 percent (10-12) from the line. The Warhawks shot 40.7 percent (22-54) from the field, 48.0 percent (12-25) from beyond the arc and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the line.
The Blue Devils hit the road for the next two games, traveling to UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Jan. 25 and to UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 28 to start the second half of conference play.
