A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
- The Blue Devils are off to an 12-4 start, far surpassing last year's wins total with nine games left, averaging 74.1. points per game. Stout has scored 80 points or more in seven games so far this year. Stout is off to their best start since starting the 2012-13 season off at 13-3.
- John Keefe appears in the top ten of eight WIAC categories - 2nd, scoring 17.2; 2nd, 3-pt. field goals made, 2.75; 1st, assists, 5.00; 5th, rebounds, 6.1; 7th, free throw percentage, .839; 2nd, steals, 1.69; 2nd, assist/turnover ratio, 3.33; 1st, minutes played, 35.1.
- John Keefe leads Stout with 17.2 points, followed by fellow guard Cory Speer with 10.2, John Lahti 8.4 and Sam Ortmann 8.3.. Speer is 21st in the WIAC, Lahti 28th and Ortmann is 30th.
- Keefe leads the team in rebounds with 6.3
- As a team, Stout is ranked third in the NCAA Division III in turnovers, averaging 9.6 turnovers per game. Ohio Wesleyan leads the country with 8.5 turnovers. Stout is ninth in overall turnovers with 154. Occidental leads Division III with 110..
- Senior center Jacob Nordstrom is averaging 4.9 rebounds and leads the team with 14 blocked shots.
- John Lahti leads the team in field goal percentage with .564, scoring a career high 20 points and shooting 8-of-9 from the field against Oshkosh.
- Against Dubuque, Keefe recorded Stout's first double-double of the season, rolling the net for 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Keefe finished with eight assists to tease with a triple-double.
BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- UW-Eau Claire used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to take an 18-point lead and went on to down UW-Stout 80-62 Wednesday at Zorn Arena.
- Eau Claire opened the game with a 6-0 lead, but the Blue Devils (12-4, 3-2 WIAC) answered back with 3-pointers by Sam Ortmann and John Keefe sandwiched a basket by Jacob Nordstrom to give Stout an 8-6 lead. It would prove to be Stout's only lead of the game, although the game stayed close until the Blugolds took off on their run around the eight minute mark.
- Eau Claire held a 49-34 halftime lead. Stout did cut the lead to as little as 10 points several times throughout the second half.
- Eau Claire had four players score in double digit, led by Jack Martinek's 21 points. Eau Claire outrebounded Stout, 43-31.
- The Blugolds also took many more trip to the free throw line, dropping in 13-of-16 charity shots. Stout, in contrast, tallied two free throws in only three attempts.
- Eau Claire shot 56.3 percent (18-32) from field in the first half, but cooled down to finish at 48.4 percent (30-62), four percentage points under the NCAA DIII leading 52.4 percent.
- Stout was led by John Keefe, who finished the night with 19 points, scoring 15 in the first half. John Lahti added 11 for Stout. Stout finished the night shooting 39.4 percent (26-66) and did drop in eight 3-point shots, four in each half. Brett Ahsenmacher hit three 3-pointers to finish with nine points.
CAREER BESTS
- The Blue Devils have tallied a number of individual team best scoring this year.
- John Keefe went off for 32 points against Superior
- Cory Speer lit up Buena Vista for 31.
- Sam Ortmann scored a best 14 points against Buena Vista, then topped that with a 16 points effort against Bethany Lutheran.
- Keegan Dickson scored 20 points and Jacob Nordstrom has matched a career high by scoring 10 three times this season.
- Isaac Elliot tallied 19 points against Robert Morris, 17 in the first half.
- John Lahti opened the season with a career-best 17 points against UM-Crookston.
- Sophomore transfer Braden Walbeck ran his career-best up the ladder throughout the season and scored 17 against Dubuque.
- The 95 team points scored by Stout against UW-Superior was the most by a Blue Devil team since downing Bethel University 95-60, to open the 2010-11 season.
- The Blue Devils are ranked fourth in the WIAC in scoring. Stout is third in assists (13.33) and fourth in steals (6.60). Stout has a turnover margin of plus-3.07, and leads the league in assists/turnover ration (1.37).
- Stout is outscoring their opponents, 74.9-69.5.
THE WIAC
- While the WIAC is always competitive, could the WIAC be stronger this year than in the past? If the non-conference records from the last two years have anything to say about it, that could prove true.
- Last season, the eight WIAC teams had a combined 52-36 non-conference record (not counting post season games). This year, the non-conference record is 68-19. Six of the eight schools have an improved record heading into the conference schedule.
- Stevens Point is the only team to have fewer wins than last year, while Oshkosh has matched their record from a year ago at this point.
- Here are the comparisons of each team, with the 2015-16 record listed first: UW-Eau Claire (7-4/10-1); UW-La Crosse (6-5/8-3); UW-Oshkosh (7-4/7-4); UW-Platteville (6-5/7-4); UW-River Falls (6-5/10-1); UW-Stevens Point (7-4/6-4); UW-Stout (4-7/9-2); UW-Whitewater (9-2/11-0).
- In the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, Eau Claire is ranked seventh, followed by UW-Whitewater (11th), and UW-River Falls (17th). Heading into conference play last year, only Whitewater was ranked (15th).
- In the WIAC preseason poll, Oshkosh was picked to finish first, followed by La Crosse, Whitewater, Eau Claire, River Falls, Stevens Point, Platteville and Stout.

SCOUTING UW-EAU CLAIRE
- The Blugolds started off the season by going 10-1, with the lone loss during the run coming at Wartburg College. Since heading into conference play, the Blugolds have gone 2-2.
- Josh Wiex leads the Blugolds with 16.7 points, followed by George Diekleman with 14.4, Jack Martinek with 13.0 and Chris Duff with 10.9 points. Wiex ranks third in the WIAC, Diekleman eighth, Martinek 14th and Duff 19th.
- The Blugolds lead the entire NCAA Division III in shooting percentage at .524. All five starters are shooting better than .490, with four of the five shooting well over .500.
- Jared Schneiderman is second in the WIAC in rebounding at 7.1 and Wiex is averaging 5.7, ranking seventh.
BLUGOLDS LAST TIME OUT
- The No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team fell 70-62 to the UW-Oshkosh Saturday night at Zorn Arena in Eau Claire.
- Live by the three, die by the three. Eau Claire's usually high-powered three-point attack was held in check for the second straight game and this time the Blugolds were unable to find an alternate route to victory. Coming into the week, Eau Claire was ranked seventh in the nation in three-point field goal percentage shooting 42.6 percent. In the last two match-ups, the Blugolds are 3-28 from deep.
- Leading the way for Eau Claire was Josh Weix who scored 23 points and added six rebounds. Jack Martinek hit his average and added 13 points. Jared Schneidermann also added another solid effort adding 10 points and eight rebounds.
LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND EAU CLAIRE MET
- The Blugolds won both contests last season, winning 72-58 in Eau Claire Jan. 13, and 78-57 in Menomonie, Jan. 30.
- In game one, the Blugolds jumped out to a 38-25 halftime lead. The Blugolds Tyson Kalien led all scorers with 18 points. George Diekleman added 16 and Jacob Kohner 10. John Keefe led Stout with 17 and Brett Ahsenmacher chipped in 10.
- UW-Stout never owned a lead in their second meeting with UW-Eau Claire. The Blugolds opened the game on an 11-0 run and Stout couldn't find the offense to make a comeback, and the Blue Devils lost, 78-57 Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils were led by Jalen Patterson who scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Brandyn Christman was next in line to Patterson, scoring eight points.
- Eau Claire had three players scoring double-figures, George Diekelman had 17, Tyson Kalien had 15 and Chris Duff added 12.
- The teams are scheduled to meet again Wednesday, Feb. 1 in Menomonie.
SCOUTING UW-WHITEWATER
- The Warhawks are ranked 25th in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The Warhawks were 21st last week.
- Three Warhawks average double-digit scoring. Chris Jones leads the team and the entire WIAC with 18.4 points, while Scotty Tyler adds 14.9 and Andre Bround 11.8. Tyler leads the team off the glass with 6.6 points and leads the conference in blocked shots with 1.50 per game.
- The WIAC has been tough on Whitewater, losing the first three games of the conference season to La Crosse, Eau Claire and River Falls. The Warhawks have bounced back to get a two point home win (68-66) against Platteville and a 73-67 win at Oshkosh to improve to 2-3 in the WIAC
- The Warhawks are second in the country in 3-point field goal percentage (.445). Alma, Mich, is first (.446).
THE WARHAWKS LAST TIME OUT
- Whitewater hit 10 of its first 12 shots from the field and shot 56.3 percent for the game Wednesday night en route to a 73-67 victory at UW-Oshkosh in a WIAC match-up in Oshkosh.
- The Warhawks built a 27-8 lead midway through the first half and withstood a rally by the Titans late in the second to improve to 4-1 in games played away from home this season.
- Junior guard Chris Jones tallied a team-best 21 points and added three assists to lead UW-Whitewater. Junior forward Scotty Tyler posted his fourth double double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Whitewater took both games last week against Stout last season, by an average margin of 14.5 points.
LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND WHITEWATER MET
- Even with the two losses, Stout kept it close in both games. In the first matchup, stout found themselves down by only four points at halftime, 31-27.
- John Keefe scored in double digits in both games. Eleven points in game one, and 16 points in game two.
- The teams are scheduled to meet again, Wednesday, Feb. 4 in Whitewater.

BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH EDDIE ANDRIST
- Eddie Andrist (202-224 at Stout, 452-414 overall) is in his 17th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 28th overall in the collegiate ranks.
- Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance five seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round.
- Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships.
- Andrist spent two stints as a UW-Stout assistant, first as a student coach in the 1970s, then again during the 1980s.
- Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar.
UW-EAU CLAIRE COACH MATT SIVERLING
- Matt Siverling is in his fifth season at UW-Eau Claire (60-59) and his seventh season overall (89-83). Siverling was the head coach at UW-Superior for two seasons before coming to Eau Claire in 2014. Siverling was a Blugold assistant coach from 2004-07.
UW-WHITEWATER COACH PAT MILLER
- Pat Miller (344-100) is in his 16th season at UW-Whitewater. Entering the 2015-16 season, Miller ranked tied for 11th all-time, among all NCAA divisions, in winning percentage among coaches with a minimum of 10 seasons coaching at the NCAA level. He passed Ohio State's Thad Matta and North Carolina's Dean Smith following the 2013-14 campaign, and just tied Division I legend Jerry Tarkanian.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. Oshkosh was picked to win the league, followed by La Crosse, Whitewater, Eau Claire, River Falls, Stevens Point, Platteville and Stout.
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
