MENOMONIE (January 14, 2017) - Five players scored in double digits as UW-Stout used a group effort to hold off and down UW-La Crosse Saturday, 65-60, on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse.Â
Jacob Nordstrom scored a career-high 12 points to lead the Blue Devils and
Cory Speer matched Nordstrom's 12 points.
In a close game, Stout (12-3, 3-1 WIAC) was able to make key plays on key possessions. The first half was a back and fourth half, in which there were 11 lead changes and three ties. Stout held the lead at the end of the half, after
John Lahti laid in a ball to get a 30-29 lead, and then drilled a three pointer assisted by
John Keefe to get the 33-29 halftime lead.
The second half was full of runs. Stout opened up the half on a 8-0 run to get a 41-32 lead, but after after a La Crosse (9-5, 1-3 WIAC) timeout, the Eagles took a 47-46 lead. After this, Stout was able to gain its composure and take a 56-55 lead after two key free throws by Nordstrom at the 3:55 mark. Stout held the lead for the rest of the game, and Speer sank the final two free throws to put the Eagles away.
Four more Blue Devils turned in good game, Lahti scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds,
Brett Ahsenmacher scored 11,
Sam Ortmann 10 and
John Keefe seven points and seven assists. Nordstrom added nine rebounds, which was also a career-best, and two blocks to his big performance.
For the Eagles, Austin Fritz scored 13 points, while Taulvish McCray scored 11 and Zach Schradle, the WIAC leading rebounder, grabbed a double-double, with 15 rebounds and 11 points.
Stout will square off against arch rival UW-Eau Claire in Zorn Arena Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m..
