LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout: The Blue Devils got their 2016 campaign off with a bang, defeating the Simpson College Storm. Stout scored 45 points from 74 plays and 521 total offensive yards. Senior Jordan Dabney hauled in 223 yards receiving on five catches, two of them touchdowns of 69- and 70-yards. Travis Urlaub picked up his second career 100-yard game,  rushing the ball 23 times for 104 yards and a TD. Stout wasted no time in their first drive of the game, driving from their own 46 yard line to set up field goal kicker Drew Pearson from 26 yards with 11:04 in the first. Simpson matched the field goal minutes later and the teams were tied at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.  The teams again were tied by the end of the first half, this time at 17. Stout went up 10-3 with 13:39 left in the quarter after Urlaub's one-yard touchdown run. Simpson responded scoring twice. Two short, five-play and six-play drives put Simpson up 17-10. The following Stout drive was capped by a 70-yard pass from Jay Alston  to Dabney, who shook his defender on the line of scrimmage and streaked down the field for the long pass and score to close the half at 17-17. In the third quarter, Stout outscored Simpson 21-13. The Blue Devils went up 24-17 on a 9-play drive capped by a wide-open, three-yard Alston to Ben Hall touchdown pass. The Blue Devils then handed the ball to senior Adolfo Pachecho, who ran the ball on all five plays of the one minute, 49 second drive. He racked up 57 yards and a touchdown, putting Stout up 31-17. Simpson answered by scoring their two touchdowns, making the game close at 31-30, with Stout on top, but Dabney answered the call again for the Blue Devils. He hauled in a 69-yard catch again, bobbling the ball several times before scoring. The Blue Devils ended the quarter up 38-30. Stout added to their lead in the fourth quarter, but this time on defense. After a Alston pooch punt that landed on the two yard line, and gave the Blue Devil defense a short field, Iyen Ogbomoh intercepted Simpson quarterback Caleb Frye and returned the ball five yards. This gave Stout a 15-point cushion and sealed the game. Javauhn Staley had seven total tackles (six solo, one assisted), a tackle for a loss of six yards, three pass breakups, and on top of that forced a fumble. Safety Tony Blair (Jr, Chippewa Falls) led the team in tackles with 10, and Isaiah Hardysacked the Simpson quarterback for a loss of 13 yards. Simpson College was led by running back Jordan Beem who rushed for 171 yards on 28 carries, and quarterback Caleb Frye who threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns on 42 attempts. | Complete Story and Box Score

LAST TIME OUT: St. Thomas: Senior QB Alex Fenske passed for 345 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions and  the No. 4-ranked Tommies had eight sacks and allowed just 134 net yards in Saturday night's 42-6 non-conference football road victory over UW-Eau Claire. UST rolled up 467 yards on offense and outscored the Blugolds 42-0 in the final three quarters. It was St. Thomas' 20th consecutive game in which it scored 30 or more points. The Toms also climbed to 17-0 in regular-season non-conference games under ninth-year coach Glenn Caruso. Senior Nick Waldvogel had TD catches of 31 and 11 yards -- his 29th and 30th career TDs. He finished with seven catches for 115 yards. Luke Iverson had five catches for 98 yards and one TD. Joe Reed had a 46-yard reception. Senior Jordan Roberts had two short scoring runs and a hard-fought 62 net rushing yards. He added a 46-yard reception to finish with 108 yards of offense. Fenske completed 17-of-28 passes before leaving after three quarters with a 35-6 lead. He averaged 20 yard per completion. Sophomore QB Jacques Perra made his Tommie debut in the final quarter and threw a 13-yard TD pass to Iverson to close the scoring. Senior Chris Pierson had an interception, senior Ryan Winter blocked an extra point, and 12 other Toms on defense had at least one sack or tackle for loss. UST forced 10 punts and allowed just 13 net yards rushing after sack yardage was deducted. The Blugolds scored first on a 63-yard TD pass, but were held to 53 net yards and five first downs over the final three quarters. | Complete Story and Box Score

WHEN STOUT AND ST. THOMAS LAST MET: The teams have met only twice on the gridiron, and Stout won both matches in 2002 and 2003. The Blue Devils won at St. Thomas in 2002, 28-7, then rolled the Tommies the following year, 51-3 in Menomonie. St. Thomas scored in the first period, on a 33-yard field goal. The Blue Devils scored 46 points in the first half. On the day, Stout rolled up 566 yards or offense, 464 on the ground as Ryan Englebert ran 15 times for 169 yards and Luke Bundegaard carried the ball 15 times for 168 yards. The Blue Devil defense picked off three passes and held the Tommies to 244 yards of total offense. | 2003 Box Score

THE SERIES: The Blue Devils lead the series, 2-0.
.

WHO'S WHO: UW-Stout: After losing some key position players, the Blue Devils are looking at the glass half full, and full of opportunity. The most visible spot that will need to be filled is at quarterback. Sophomore Jay Alston who played in four games last year, grabbed the top spot and responded with 311 yards through the air in the season opener Saturday against Simpson College. Alston completed 15-of-27 passes with three TDs in his most complete day of work as a Blue Devil. Alston also showed he could run, picking up 32 yards on the ground. Senior transfer Danny Farley saw time in special situations Saturday. Farley is yet to complete a pass as a Blue Devil, but he did run three times for 10 yards. After one year at a junior college, Farley played at Division I Rhode Island for a year. He transferred to Division III Delaware Valley State in Pennsylvania before coming to Stout.

CATCHING THE BALL:  Stout's leading receiver last season, Brian Alvarez, will return this season as a wide receiver coach for the team. He will be working with former teammates Chris Pica-Anderson (Sr, Eleva), Kevion McDonald (So, Hopkins, Minn) and Jordan Dabney (Sr, Monteca, Calif). Pica-Anderson caught 48 balls in the slot last season for 529 yards and a pair of scores. McDonald, as a true freshman, displayed his athleticism in catching 28 passes for 422 yards and two touchdowns. Dabney, in his first year with the Blue Devils, displayed a knack for finding the end zone. Dabney scored six times, second behind only Alvarez, with 20 receptions for 416 yards and a team-best 20.8 yards per catch. Dabney gained more than half of that (223 yards) in the season opener as the Blue Devils piled up 311 yards in receptions. Pica-Anderson had four receptions for 31 yards and Akema Collins pulled down two passes for 35 yards. Tight end Ben Hall, after sitting out most of last year due to an injury, recorded his second collegiate TD, a three-yard pass to the corner of the end zone.

RUNNING THE BALL:   Travis Urlaub (Sr, Stratford), Adolfo Pacheco (Sr, South Elgin, Ill) and KeyShawn Carpenter (Jr, Evergreen Park, Ill) all carried the ball last season. Urlaub emerged as the team's leading rusher in 2015, carrying the ball 63 times for 350 yards and a team-best 5.6 yards per carry. Urlaub earned the starting spot in the final four games and in his first start, ran for 105 yards on 10 carries against UW-River Falls. Pacheco is looking to return to the all-conference form he showed as a true freshman in 2013; Pacheco rushed for a career-low 330 yards, but still found the end zone, scoring five times. The senior is currently 11th on the Stout all-time rushing list with 1722 yards and is just short of getting mentioned on the all-time scoring list, tallying 16 career TDs for 96 points. Carpenter carried the ball 67 times last season for 248 yards and a score, but is taking the year off. Urlaub recorded the second 100-yard game of his career against Simpson, grinding out 104 yards on 23 carries (4.5 yd/carry) and a 1-yard TD plunge.

PERSISTENT PACHECO:  Adolfo Pacheco got all 57 yards and his touchdown in one drive in the third quarter of the 45-30 win over Simpson College. And Pacheco was the only Blue Devils to carry the ball. Starting on the Stout 43, Pacheco carried the ball five consecutive times, gained three first downs and had three carries 10 yards or more. Pacheco went 4-, 10-, 20-, 5- and 18-yards, hitting paydirt on the final scamper. Pacheco carried the ball once in the first half for no gain and finished the day with the 57 yards on six carries - good for a 9.5 yard per carry average.

"DABONAIR" DABNEY: Jordan Dabney, who scored six receiving touchdowns in 2015, added two more scores in the season-opener with Simpson College. Dabney hauled in five passes for 223 yards and two TDs, including a 69-yard score that he bobbled several times around the 30-yard line and still managed to easily beat his defender to the end zone. Dabney had receptions of 10-, 62-, 12-, 70-, and 69-yards. His 62 yard reception to the 1-yard set up a one-yard jaunt by running back Travis Urlaub. Last season, Dabney hauled in four passes for 124 yards and two TDs against Loras College. Dabney's  day was the first time a Stout receiver exceeded 200 yards since Dan Austin set the school record with 241 yards in 2003.  Dabney's 223 yards against Simpson is more than half of his total 416 receiving yards in 2015. Dabney led the way for the Blue Devils with a 20.8 yard per catch average.

O-LINE: The Blue Devil offensive line returns virtually intact. With the exception of David Koronkiewicz, graduated center, Stout will return several players who both battled injury and recieved playing time in the stead of injured players. The injury-battered Blue Devil offensive line allowed only six sacks throughout the entire season - 10 less than any other team in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III in fewest sacks allowed. Kane'ala Atchison-Keolanui and Logan Stoa will key a line that has gained quite a bit of experience. Atchison-Keolanui was the Blue Devils' only first team all-conference pick last season and could move from the guard spot to take over at center. The senior lineman from Lodi was an all-region pick last season and this season was a D3football.com second team preseason All-America selection. Other key contributors include junior Corey Parris, senior Mark Hatcher, junior Cody Marquardt, sophomore Caleb Adams and junior Greg Okray.

DEFENSE:
The Blue Devils return a good portion of their defense from last year. The defensive line returns veterans Isaiah Hardy (Jr, Olympia Fields, Ill), Iyen Ogbomoh (Jr, Olympia Fields, Ill), Travis Shackleton (Jr, Baldwin) and Troy Rudesill (Jr, Spring Valley). Hardy is one of three defensive players to have started all games last year and recorded five tackles for loss. Shackleton, Rudesill and Ogbomoh played in all 10 games. At linebacker, Josh Robinson (Sr, Lakeville, Minn) started all 10 games, recording 65 tackles, 23 solo. He had 3.5 tackles for loss and forced a fumble. Looking to fill the other linebacker spot will be Mike Maenner (Jr, Eau Claire), Joe Hakeem (Sr, Woodbury, Minn), Jared Allen (Jr, Maple Grove, Minn), Bradley Myers (So, Triton, Minn), and Nick Schulenburg (Jr, Fort Atkinson).

BALL HAWKS: The Blue Devils picked up where they left off last year, recording two interceptions against Simpson College. Linebacker Iyen Ogbomoh picked off a pass in the flat on the 5-yard line and ambled in for a score against Simpson to help widen the scoring gap in the fourth quarter. Blaise Pridgen-Engle notched his first Blue Devils interception, a pick that helped to seal the win against Simpson.  Defensive back Michael Pierson (Jr, Lino Lake, Minn) took advantage of his opportunity and recorded 53 tackles and produced a team-high three interceptions - fifth in the WIAC - and nine pass break-ups at cornerback. Javauhn Staley (Sr, Sanford, Fla) had two interceptions and five pass break-ups on the corner. Chase Fanelle (So, Kenosha) saw action in seven games. LaRon Thompson (Sr, Modesto, Calif) is expected to be back at corner. Coming off a season where he had nine pass break-ups, Thompson was lost for the season after two games in 2015. Tony Blair (Jr, Chippewa Falls) was the only safety to make it through the season without missing a game. As a sophomore, Blair started all 10 games, recorded his first collegiate interception in the season-opener, was second on the team in tackles with 77 and had three pass break-ups.Transfer Josh Johnson (Jr, Little Canada, Minn) had a solid opening game going, recording his first Stout interception before breaking his foot against nationally-ranked Bethel University. Enzo Rosani played nine games, but injured his hand in practice and missed a game, playing the final games with a cast. Besides returning a blocked field goal attempt for a TD, the French player had two interceptions, four pass break-ups and 48 tackles. Levi Wolf (So, Elmwood), who switched from quarterback to safety, Jason Dilly (So, Andover, Minn), who played as a true freshman, but was out last year, and transfer Blaise Pridgen-Engle (Fr, St. Paul, Minn), will look for time at safety.

GIVE IT A BOOT: Punter Clark Riedel (Jr, Waukesha) earned 2015 honorable mention all-conference honors after leading the conference in punting average at 40.1 yards per boot.  Riedel improved on that average in the season opener, punting only four times, averaging 41.0 yards per kick and placing two inside the 20. None of his kicks were returned. Quarterback Jay Alston executed a nearly perfect pooch kick, going 37 yards and rolling the ball out at the 1-yard line.

ON A TEE: The kicking game returns intact. Taylor Pahl (Jr, Greenville) started off as the placekicker for extra points and field goals, but then specialized on kickoffs. Drew Pearson (So, Wausau) took over the placekicking duties, and drilled 27-of-28 extra point attempts, while making a pair of field goals. Clay Dziekan (So, Mondovi) returns at long snapper.

PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished seventh in the competitive WIAC last season and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish seventh again this year.

WHO'S WHO: St. Thomas:  The Tommies are ranked fourth for the second consecutive poll in the D3football.com Top 25 poll and are coming off a convincing 42-6 win at UW-Eau Claire Saturday. After spotting the Blugolds an early TD, St. Thomas virtually shut down Eau Claire the rest of the way. Senior Jordan Roberts, D3football.com National Offensive Player of the Year, had two short scoring runs and a hard-fought 62 net rushing yards. He added a 46-yard reception to finish with 108 yards of offense. Fenske completed 17-of-28 passes before leaving after three quarters with a 35-6 lead. He averaged 20 yard per completion.  Senior Chris Pierson had an interception, senior Ryan Winter blocked an extra point, and 12 other Toms on defense had at least one sack or tackle for loss. UST forced 10 punts and allowed just 13 net yards rushing after sack yardage was deducted.

Roberts  had a litany of accomplishments last year as the Tommies won the MIAC and surged to the NCAA Division III championship game. Roberts surpassed 100 rushing yards in 11 of 15 games, including three with 230 or more yards, broke a 25-year old school record for rushing with 2,092 yards (5.9 ypc) and was the first MIAC player to score 36 touchdowns and 218 points in one season. Roberts and three teammates - OT Will Hilbert; DT Ryan Winter; and LB Jesse Addo - earned D3football.com preseason All-America honors. The Tommies in 2015 allowed only 12.5 points per game, collecting 56 sacks, and their offense averaged 51.2 points per game and 516 yards of total offense per contest.  | Tommie Statistics

FIELD GOAL BLOCK & RETURN: During the 2015 season, Travis Shackleton blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt by UW-La Crosse in La Crosse, Oct. 10, 2015, and Enzo Rosani scooped up the ball on the La Crosse 14, returning it 86 yards for a score. The blocked kick was Shackleton's first career block and the touchdown was Rosani's first collegiate TD. There is no mention in the UW-Stout, the WIAC or the NCAA record books for returning blocked field goal attempts. There will now be a category in the Stout record book. After sending out a request to NCAA Division III sports information directors, the following list of blocked field goals was compiled.

Stout will hold a Military Appreciation Day, Saturday, Oct. 29 when they meet UW-Platteville at 2 p.m. The seniors will be recognized Saturday, Nov. 12 in the final regular season game as Stout hosts UW-Whitewater at 2 p.m.

MAX SPARGER: UW-Stout dedicated the Don & Nona Williams Stadium press box in honor of former UW-Stout athletic director and coach Max Sparger, September 11, 2010. Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season. | A 10-week series on Stout football is available.

TAILGATING RETURNED IN 2009: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games. The south end of the parking lot by the Don and Nona Williams Stadium has been designated as a tailgating area known as the "Tailgate Zone." Fans will be able to participate in the Blue Devil Walk. Tailgating is permitted three hours before the game, and tailgating activities will cease at game time. Only propane grills are permitted, no open flame grills. Tobacco is not permitted.

EUROPEAN FLAVOR: UW-Stout coach Clayt Birmingham has been active in raising the popularity of American football in Europe and has made several trips to Europe to participate in workshops and coaching clinics. Last fall, the Blue Devils had a coach from Germany into preseason camp for a couple of days. Enzo Rosani began his career as a Blue Devil, joining Stout as a cornerback from France on the 2014 roster. Feature Story The Blue Devils have consistently welcomed European coaches to their training camp. In 2011 it was Nico Teichert and Johannes Fiebig from Germany getting an up close look at American football. The Blue Devils also had Antti Kurenniemi, a native of Finland, on their roster in 2011. Kurenniemi saw action in several games. In 2012, the Blue Devils, for the first time in several years, did not host a European coach, but did have an international player, Jan Andre Millemann from Germany, who is the subject of this feature story.

DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: The Blue Devils' home stadium - Don & Nona Williams Stadium - got a facelift during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembles natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. Only the Wisconsin Badgers played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, nearly every WIAC school either has or is planning an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils will take their longest trip of the season when they travel to Mayville State University in North Dakota, Saturday, Sept. 17. The Blue Devils last played the NAIA school in back-to-back years 1992 and 1993. Stout won both contests.
