WHEN STOUT AND MAYVILLE LAST MET: You have to go way back to the early 1990s to see when these last two teams met. None of the players that will take the field were even born when the teams last met in 1993. Stout won the 1993 contest in Menomonie, 30-0, giving first year Blue Devil coach Ed Meierkort his first win. The Blue Devils opened the 1992 season with a 21-14 win at Mayville, ND | Box Score
THE SERIES: The Blue Devils lead the series, 2-0.
.
WHO'S WHO: UW-Stout: Sophomore Jay Alston (Rochester, Minn.) who played in four games last year, grabbed starting quarterback spot and responded with 311 yards through the air in the season opener Sept. 3 against Simpson College. Alston completed 15-of-27 passes with three TDs in his most complete day of work as a Blue Devil. Alston added to his total against the Tommies of St. Thomas, he now has throw for 459 yards and four TDs on the season and looks to add to that total.
Backup and special situations quarterback Danny Farley (Sr, Boonton Township, NJ) saw a good chunck of action against the Tommies Sept. 10. He went 2-for-9, throwing for 23 yards. Farley also tallied his first TD as a Blue Devil; he conncected with Jordan Dabney (Sr, Monteca, Cal.) on a 13-yard dump.
CATCHING THE BALL: In Stout's season opener, Dabney gained more than half of that (223 yards) in the season opener as the Blue Devils piled up 311 yards in receptions. Pica-Anderson had four receptions for 31 yards and Akema Collins (Jr, Streamwood, Ill.) pulled down two passes for 35 yards. Tight end Ben Hall (Sr, North Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), after sitting out most of last year due to an injury, recorded his second collegiate TD, a three-yard pass to the corner of the end zone. Dabney continued his TD-catching ways in the Stout's game against St. Thomas. The senior had the only two recieving TDs on the day and led the team in recieving yards with 76. Collins also added three receptions and 49 yards against the Tommies.
RUNNING THE BALL: Urlaub recorded the second 100-yard game of his career against Simpson, grinding out 104 yards on 23 carries (4.5 yd/carry) and a 1-yard TD plunge. Urlaub again took the majority of the carries for the Blue Devils against St. Thomas; he rushed for 70 yards on 17 carries (4.1 yd/carry).
PERSISTENT PACHECO: Adolfo Pacheco got all 57 yards and his touchdown in one drive in the third quarter of the 45-30 win over Simpson College. And Pacheco was the only Blue Devils to carry the ball. Starting on the Stout 43, Pacheco carried the ball five consecutive times, gained three first downs and had three carries 10 yards or more. Pacheco went 4-, 10-, 20-, 5- and 18-yards, hitting paydirt on the final scamper. Pacheco carried the ball once in the first half for no gain and finished the day with the 57 yards on six carries - good for a 9.5 yard per carry average. The senior is currently 11th on the Stout all-time rushing list with 1745 yards and is just short of getting mentioned on the all-time scoring list, tallying 16 career TDs for 96 points.
"DABONAIR" DABNEY: Jordan Dabney, who scored six receiving touchdowns in 2015, added two more scores in the season-opener with Simpson College. Dabney hauled in five passes for 223 yards and two TDs, including a 69-yard score that he bobbled several times around the 30-yard line and still managed to easily beat his defender to the end zone. Dabney had receptions of 10-, 62-, 12-, 70-, and 69-yards. His 62 yard reception to the 1-yard set up a one-yard jaunt by running back Travis Urlaub. Last season, Dabney hauled in four passes for 124 yards and two TDs against Loras College. Dabney's day was the first time a Stout receiver exceeded 200 yards since Dan Austin set the school record with 241 yards in 2003. Dabney's 223 yards against Simpson is more than half of his total 416 receiving yards in 2015. Dabney led the way for the Blue Devils with a 20.8 yard per catch average. Now through two games, Dabney is Stout's leading reciever. He has 299 yards to his name (27.2 yd/catch) and four total TDs.
O-LINE: A season after giving up six total sacks, the Blue Devil offensive line has given up six sacks so far this season. But blitz-happy St.Thomas had a lot to do with, as the Tommies pressed the Blue Devils for four sacks. It has taken a little bit of time to get the offensive line's chemistry back, considering that the team played a variety of different linemen due to injuries. Kane'ala Atchinson-Keolanui and Logan Stoa continue to be the biggest contributors for the line, protecting the blindside of quarterbacks Alston and Farley.
DEFENSE: The Blue Devils have looked better on defense, giving up less yardage than the Blue Devil offense has produced this season. Safety Tony Blair (Jr, Chippewa Falls) has led the team in tackles so far with 18 (10 unassisted, 8 assisted) and outside linebacker Josh Johnson (Jr, Little Canada, Minn.) is just behind him with 14 total tackles. Johnson leads the team in tackles-for-loss this season, with two which he recorded against St. Thomas. Troy Rudesill (Jr, Spring Valley) leads the defensive line in tackles with 11, which includes 1.5 tackles-for-a-loss. Iyen Ogbomoh recorded his first sack of the season in Stout's loss to St. Thomas, he rushed the quarterback on a play-action-pass which resulted in a six-yard loss for the Tommies.
BALL HAWKS: The Blue Devils picked up where they left off last year, recording two interceptions against Simpson College. Linebacker Ogbomoh picked off a pass in the flat on the 5-yard line and ambled in for a score against Simpson to help widen the scoring gap in the fourth quarter. Blaise Pridgen-Engle notched his first Blue Devils interception, a pick that helped to seal the win against Simpson. The defnesive backfield continued their route-jumping ways against St. Thomas. Enzo Rosani grabbed his first interception of the season and recored three solo tackles in the game. Javauhn Staley continued to man his corner position well; against the Tommies Staley broke up four passes, bringing his season total to seven, as well as recording some big hits for a total of three tackles.
GIVE IT A BOOT: Punter Clark Riedel (Jr, Waukesha) punted the ball four times in the opener against Simpson College averaging 41.0 yards per kick and placing two inside the 20.Quarterback Jay Alston executed a nearly perfect pooch kick, going 37 yards and rolling the ball out at the 1-yard line. Riedel punted five times against the Tommies, averaging 37.8 yards, which included another ball inside the 20.
ON A TEE: Field goal kicker Drew Pearson has gone 2-for-4 on the season, nailing all of his field goals under 30 yards, his longest kicked recorded at 26 yards. Against St. Thomas, Taylor Pahl kicked off four times and recorded a total of 258 yards (64.5 yds/kick), this total included one touchback.
PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished seventh in the competitive WIAC last season and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish seventh again this year.
WHO'S WHO: Mayville State: The Comets had five players selected to the Northern Star Athletic Association (NSAA) preseason team - Andrew Blake, Junior quarterback; Jacob Robbins, senior wide receiver; Dantrel Horne, senior wide receiver; Chris Mayes, junior tight end nd Israel Evans, junior offensive line. Blake, Robbins, and Horne were key pieces of the Mayville State offense last season and earned NSAA Second-Team All-Conference honors. As a team, the Comets were picked to finish sixth in the seven team league. The Comets had a solid 2015 season as they finished with an overall record of 5-5 and a North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) record of 3-4.
The Comets now sit at 1-1, beating the Buena Vista Beavers 42-33 behind good offensive days from quarterback Andrew Blake and wide reciever Dantrel Horne. Blake threw for 368 yards completing 35 of his 58 attempts with two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, while Horne caught the ball 12 times for 178 yards and threw for one touchdown in the game. The Comets' second game was much like the Blue Devils, a lopsided loss. The Comets fell to DII Quincy University Hawks in a devistating 64-7 loss. Even in the loss, the Comets' Damion Sanders collected 11 tackles, Nick Xalis 10 tackles, and Blaine Miller added 8 tackles and a fumble recovery on the goal line.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season. | A 10-week series on Stout football is available.
DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: The Blue Devils' home stadium - Don & Nona Williams Stadium - got a facelift during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembles natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. Only the Wisconsin Badgers played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, nearly every WIAC school either has or is planning an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.
UP NEXT: The Blue Devils will take a week off before they begin conference play at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m.
