Rally falls short, Titans end Blue Devil season in tournament

UW-Oshkosh 5, UW-Stout 2 | WIAC Softball Championship

EAU CLAIRE (May 6, 2016) - UW-Oshkosh chipped and chipped and chipped away, scoring five single runs, then held off a UW-Stout seventh inning rally to end the Blue Devils' season with a 5-2 decision Friday in an elimination game at the WIAC Softball Championship at Carson Park.

The Titans (26-12) scored five runs on eight hits, getting runs in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to build a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the final innings.

With one out, Rachel Thomas reached on an error, then stole second. Thomas moved to second on a Karley Wiensch groundout, then came home when Beth Wood laced a single to left field. Gabby Gawreluk came on to run for Wood and came home on Alicia Meyer's double, but that would be it.

The Blue Devils (17-21) outhit the Titans, 10-8. Wiensch, Wood and Sara Griesbach each had two hits for Stout. Tori Workman took the loss for Stout, marking off six strikeouts. The senior hurler finished her career with 508 strikeouts, sixth on the WIAC career list.

The game marked the final game for seniors Wiensch, Griesbach, Gawreluk, Nicole Rogers and Workman.

The Titans will face UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, May 7 at noon.
