D3photography.com Photo GallerySTEVENS POINT (February 23, 2016) - UW-Stout and UW-Stevens Point played to a draw after three quarters, but the Pointers put on a spurt in the final quarter and went on to a 55-44 win in the first round of the WIAC Championship Tuesday at Berg Gymnasium.
The 17th ranked Pointers (20-6) held a one-point, 14-13, after one quarter, but the Blue Devils (10-16) tied the score just before halftime when
Bailey Diersen (Fr, Greenville) hit a jumper just before the buzzer for a 23-23 halftime score. The score was knotted at 36 apiece after three quarters, but the Pointers took off on an 11-4 run over the first five minutes of the final stanza and took the win. The Pointers' Mickey Roland had seven points in the run - half of her game total - and also had two steals in the stretch.
Shannan Watkins (Fr, Hoover, Ala) scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the first half for the Blue Devils.
Jenna Goldsmith (Jr, St. Anthony, Minn), who was relatively quiet in the first half with three points and two rebounds, finished the game with her fifth double-double of the season recording 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Allie Miceli scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Pointers and had nine rebounds. Roland finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.
The teams were even in the first half. Stout shot 10-of-29 from the floor (34.5 percent),while the Pointers connected on 9-of-28 (32.1 percent). Stout finished 19-of-63 from the floor for the game, while the Pointers hit 19-of-54 from the field. The Pointers held an advantage at the line, making 13-of-22 charity shots, including 10-of-16 in the second half. Stout shot 4-of-6 from the line, 3-of-4 in the second half.
The Pointers will travel to second seeded UW-Oshkosh, Thursday, Feb. 25, in one semi-final game. UW-Eau Claire will play at top seeded UW-River Falls in the other semi-final contest. The Blugolds defeated UW-Whitewater, 69-59.
