Blue Devils close out regular season with loss at River Falls

UW-River Falls 4, UW-Stout 0 (Box Score)

RIVER FALLS (February 13, 2016) - After holding 13th-ranked UW-River Falls to one goal over two periods, UW-Stout saw their hopes of hosting a WIAC first round playoff game go away as the Falcons scored three third period goals in the final three minutes of the game and take a 4-0 win at Hunt Arena Saturday.

The Blue Devils (9-11-5, 1-6-1 WIAC) needed a win to tie UW-Superior in the standings. The Blue Devils held the tie-breaker with the Yellowjackets, but the point proved moot.

Stout was outshot, 38-22, by the Falcons. River Falls got onto the scoreboard with less than two minutes remaining in the second period on a power play goal by Zach Schroetenboer.

The Falcons' (15-6-4, 5-2-1 WIAC) Joe Drapluk scored at 17:26, then took a 3-1 lead on an empty net goal after Stout goalie Nick Schmit was pulled at 17:52. River Falls sealed the deal on a Mike Williams goal at 18:53.

Schmit recorded 34 saves, while his River Falls' counterpart, Tanner Milliron had 22 saves.

The Blue Devils will play at UW-Superior, Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20 in a first round WIAC contest. The Falcons earned the top seed in the tournament and will host the winner of the Stout/Superior series, Feb. 26-27.
