MENOMONIE (December 6, 2016) - UW-Superior outscored UW-Stout 15-3 to open the third quarter and the Yellowjackets went on to 68-63 win over the Blue Devils Tuesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
With the score at 26-23 at halftime, the Blue Devils answered Superior's first basket of the half, then went silent for the next four minutes to take a 38-29 lead with 4:32 remaining. Stout cut the lead to four points on a basket by
Jenna Goldsmith and a basket and a free throw by
Anna Brown to pull to within 38-34 at 3:05. But the Yellowjackets shot the lead back up to nine points and led 45-38 at the end of the third period.
Superior (4-3) built the lead up to double digits in the fourth period. Stout (2-5) stayed with seven to nine points as they were forced to foul. The Yellowjackets made 12-of-18 free throws in the final 1-minute, 40-seconds of the game. Superior finished the game shooting 17-of-24 from the line.
The Blue Devils actually held an advantage at the line, making 11 free throws in each half to finish the game at 22-of-30, hitting 73.3 percent of their charity shots.
Superior's Hannah Norlin led all scorers with 22 points, followed by Hailey Kontny with 21 points and eight rebounds. Justine Larson, who was scoreless in the first half, finished the game with 10 points. The Yellowjackets held a small 45-40 advantage off the glass. Bailee Bartunek pulled down eight boards.
Shannan Watkins led Stout with a career-high 21 points.
Jenna Goldsmith chipped in 14 points and
Anna Brown had 11.
Carolyn Feddema led Stout off the boards with six.
Stout returns to action Saturday, Dec. 10 when they host the University of Duqubue at 2 p.m.
