Weekly Interviews
LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT: UW-Platteville rolled up a 48-6 lead before the Blue Devils were able to put a touchdown on the board, but once they started, they piled up three TDs in a 55-27 loss to the 11th ranked Pioneers Saturday at Don and Nona Williams Stadium. |
Stats and Story
LAST TIME OUT: UW-STEVENS POINT: Stevens Point rallied from a halftime deficit to earn a road WIAC victory, 38-22, and spoiled UW-La Crosse's Homecoming Oct. 29. The Pointers scored 28 second half points and held the host Eagles to just one score over the final 30 minutes of play. Senior quarterback Kyle Larson threw for 387 yards against one of the league's best passing defenses. He connected with junior wide receiver Jerry Williams for an 82-yard touchdown, one of five TD passes in the game for Larson, tying a career-high. Williams and sophomore Steve Herra each had more than 100 yards receiving for the Pointers on the day and accounted for three of UWSP's touchdowns. Senior Jared Pankow had 93 receiving yards to surpass the 600-yard mark for the season. |
Stats and Story
WHEN STOUT AND STEVENS POINT LAST MET: The Blue Devils had some late-game heroics from the Kujak brothers in their last matchup with the Pointers. After Stout surrendered a late game rushing touchdown to the Pointers, the Blue Devils had to drive 80 yards and needed a score in order to overcome the four point deficit. On a second-and-10 situation,
Hank Kujak threw a short slant pass to
Brian Alvarez who broke loose down the sideline and turned the catch into a 73 yard run to the seven yard line. After two short runs, Stout faced a third and goal situation.
Hank Kujak was able to drop a pass over the middle to brother
Reggie Kujak who secured the ball for a score. With 25 seconds remaining, Stout had sealed victory. |
Stats and Story
THE SERIES: Stevens Point leads the series 50-19-2.
WHO'S WHO: UW-Stout: Coach Birmingham has been using a combination of quarterback
Jay Alston's arm and legs to help give the offense a boost. In the last two games he has rushed for more than 140 yards and two scores while also throwing the ball for 441 yards and four scores. Alston has been showing spirts of the form he had at the beginning of the season. Alston was able to score twice through the air against Platteville, but
Danny Farley was able to give Stout a boost late in the game, at the five-minute mark in the fourth, Farley drove the ball 78 yards on three plays to throw a perfect back-shoulder pass to
Kevion McDonald for a score. The drive took a total of 49 seconds.
CATCHING THE BALL: Stout had their second string receivers make plays against Platteville.
Kevion McDonald was the leading pass catcher with six receptions for 85 yards.
Brian Sandifer showed everyone that he could be a redzone threat, catching two TDs and 101 yards on only five catches. His two catches were balls that took a lot of concentration to secure, but he proved he was not just a big body, but that he could make plays when it counted.
On the season,
Jordan Dabney leads the team with 34 catches for 646 yards and five TDs with a 80.75 yards per game.
Chris Pica-Anderson has 24 grabs for 252 yards, one TD and a 31.50 yards per catch average. Sandifer is second on the team in touchdown grabs with three on the season.
RUNNING THE BALL: The rushing attack gained 156 yards on the ground against Platteville, but was unable to find the endzone due to a high number of fumbles and mis queues.
Adolfo Pacheco was once again Stout's number one rusher, who gained 87 yards on 15 carries, while
Travis Urlaub was close behind with 12 carries, but half the yardage. Alston also added to the rushing attack against Platteville, gaining 20 yards on nine attempts.
Senior offensive lineman
Kane'ala Atchison-Keolanui got his number in the stat column against River Falls, rushing the ball on a fourth and one opportunity.
PERSISTENT PACHECO: Adolfo Pacheco earned the number one running back position three weeks ago and has used this opportunity to continue to work his way in to the record book, while also having one of the better games of his career. Against Eau Claire was his fifth best game in terms of yards-per-game. He was able to pass his sophomore best by a single yard. The highlight of the game for Pacheco was his 85-yard TD run at the beginning of the third quarter, the scamper was the longest of his career. Pacheco was able to surpass two more Stout rushers on the all-time list in a game against Eau Claire. He passed Andy Reese (1894 yards, 2004-2007) and Nick Ohman (1925 yards, 2001-2004) in the record book; he is currently seventh with 2076 yards, he needs 34 yards to pass Rich Vargas (1990-92) who sits at 2110 yards.
O-LINE: A season after giving up six total sacks, the Blue Devil offensive line has given up 14 sacks so far this season. But blitz-happy St.Thomas had a lot to do with, as the Tommies pressed the Blue Devils for four sacks. It has taken a little bit of time to get the offensive line's chemistry back, considering that the team played a variety of different linemen due to injuries. Preseason All-American Kane'ala Atchinson-Keolanui and
Logan Stoa continue to be the biggest contributors for the line, protecting the blindside of quarterbacks Alston and Farley.
DEFENSE: Junior safety
Tony Blair still leads the team in tackles, with almost double the amount of the next tackler. Blair has 76 (48 solo, 28 assisted) on the season, while senior linebacker
Josh Robinson is second on the team with 42 (24 solo, 18 assisted). Stout had a tough time defending the two headed attack of the Pioneers, who rushed for 183 yards and two scores, while throwing the ball for 382 yards and six TDs. The Blue Devils were able to disrupt the backfield a bit, having three sacks on the day, one from Luke Wiltz and two from
Isaiah Hardy.
BALL HAWKS: Stout safety
Enzo Rosani is second WIAC in interceptions this season, snagging three picks on the year. Safety opposite of Blair also leads the WIAC in tackles with 76. The safety position anchors the team on defense being the eyes of the defense and quarterbacking the defensive team. Senior cornerback
Javauhn Staley is second in the WIAC in pass break-ups an passes defended with eight total. The other corner position held by Laron Thompson, has also helped the Blue Devils; Thompson recorded his first career interception last week against La Crosse. He was able to rip the ball from the wideout on a long pass down the sideline. Freshman
Darius Huntley was also able to record his first career interception this season; against Platteville he jumped a crossing route and snagged the ball in mid air.
GIVE IT A BOOT: Punter
Clark Riedel has punted the ball 45 times in five games, for a total of 1774 yards, averaging 39.5 yards per kick, ranking third in the WIAC. Riedel really showed off his skill against Eau Claire, he was able to match his season total by pinning five punts inside the 20 yard line, including balls on the seven, five and four yardlines. He dropped a punt inside the 20 against Platteville too, bringing his season total to 11 inside the 20 yardline. Quarterback
Jay Alston executed a nearly perfect pooch kick, going 37 yards and rolling the ball out at the 1-yard line against Simpson College.
ON A TEE: Pearson is 13-of-15 for field goals. Pearson also kept his PATs perfect, nailing all three attempts to go 22-for-22. Pearson has tallied 61 points, fourth among all players in the WIAC and second among kickers. Pearson is currently fourth nationally in field goals per game (1.63) and 13th nationally in field goal percentage (.867).
The longest kick of his career weighed in at 52 yards in the waning seconds of the first half against Mayville State, Sept. 17. The kick was only two yards short of the school record. The last time a UW-Stout player kicked a 50-plus yard field goal was Oct. 20, 2007 when Brandon Raciborski gave Stout a 28-27 win over UW-River Falls. Against St. Thomas,
Taylor Pahl kicked off four times and recorded a total of 258 yards (64.5 yds/kick), this total included one touchback. Pearson is one of only a handful of Stout players to kick a 50-plus yard field goal and is likely the only Blue Devil to kick two in the same season. Pearson currently leads the WIAC in field goal percentage (.845) and number of field goals made (11).
Pearson continued his 50-yard field goal ways against Oshkosh. He knocked in a 51-yarder around the 13-minute mark in the second quarter. This was something that hadn't happened since 1996. Since 1996, only six UW-Stout kickers have attempted field goals of 50-yards or longer, and only three kickers have attempted two 50-yards plus in a single season. With Pearson drilling his second 50-yard field goal, a 51-yarder in the first half, he is the only Stout kicker to make two 50-plus yard field goals in a single season since at least 1990. (Additional records are not readily available). Pearson is on the Fred Mitchell Award watch list, a list that consists of kickers on all levels of the NCAA and NAIA.
PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished seventh in the competitive WIAC last season and according to a
preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish sev
enth again this year.
WHO'S WHO UW-STEVENS POINT: The Pointers have had a good season, their only loses have come from teams ranked in the top 12 in the country: Whitewater (2), Oshkosh (5) and Platteville (11). Point just came off a come back win against UW-La Crosse, scoring 28 points in the second half to win 38-22. Senior quarterback Kyle Larson is third in the WIAC in passing yards per game, averaging 264.8 per game; he also is second in WIAC in passing TDs with 16. On defense, Pointers' Julyean Givens is second in the WIAC with 62 tackles (47 solo, 15 assisted) and John Kontowicz is leading the WIAC in sacks with seven solo (0.88 per game).

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season. | A 10-week series on Stout football is available.
TAILGATING RETURNED IN 2009: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games.
