St. Benedict 63, UW-Stout 54
ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (November 20, 2016) - Trailing by 21 points after the third period, 55-35, UW-Stout put together a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, but came up short, 63-54, Sunday at the College of St. Benedict Tip-Off Tournament Sunday.
Trailing 57-36 a minute into the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils (1-2) began their move, going on a 10-0 run to pull to within 57-46.
Kyncaide Diedrich scored five points in the run,
Jenna Goldsmith four points and
Shannan Watkins added a free throw.
After the Blazers' Nikki Fokken dropped in a bucket, Diedrich got the basket back and Goldsmith hit a pair of free throws and Stout was within nine points, 59-50, with 54 seconds remaining. That would be as close as the contest would get as the Blazers' (3-0) Alison Newton made all four of her free throw attempts.
Goldsmith led Stout with 14 points, going 6-for-6 from the line, and seven rebounds.
Kyncaide Diedrich, who was named to the all-tournament team, had nine points and six rebounds. Watkins tossed in nine points and dished off six assists.
Bailey Diersen recorded four steals, matching St. Benedicts' steal total.
Tournament MVP Chelsey Guetter led all scorers with 18 points and seven boards for the host team. Newton had 15 points.
Neither team finished the game shooting particularly well. Stout finished the game shooting 30 percent (18-60), while the Blazers shot 39.6 percent (21-53). St. Benedict shot 50 percent in the first period, 41.2 percent in the second, 35.7 percent in the third and the Blue Devil pressure held them to 16.7 percent in the fourth quarter. Stout outscored St. Benedict, 20-8, in the fourth quarter.
St. Benedict outrebounded Stout 41-33, with St. Ben's having three players with seven or more rebounds. Both teams were fairly equal at the line, with Stout hitting 16-of-24 (66.7 percent) and the Blazers 18-of-23 (78.3 percent).
The Blue Devils will be at Hamline University, Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. before taking a break for Thanksgiving, then getting back into action Sunday, Nov. 27 at St. Catherine.
