CROOKSTON (November 15, 2016) - The Blue Devils took revenge against the Golden Eagles in their season opener. Almost a year had pasted since they lost in their 2015-16 season opener. The Blue Devils stuck to their game plan and came out with victory in the 2016-17 opener on the road.
John Keefe seemed to be in mid season form as he poured in 22 points and shot 11-of-11 from the free throw line.
Keegan Dickson also helped out, adding 15 and playing a total of 39 minutes.
Stout found themselves in an early 8-0 hole to open the game. They first got on the board on a Dickson three pointer that was assisted by Sam Ortman, then Issac Elliot brought the early lead to five as he drained a mid range jumper. The Blue Devils took their first lead, 11-10, on a
John Lahti layup, and continuted to fight and open up the lead 41-31 on a mid range jumper from Corey Speer to end the half.
The second half the Blue Devils didn't surrender a lead in the second half. The Golden Eagles closed the gap to within four points with about four minutes left to play, but Stout pushed the gas pedal and went up by eight after a missed three pointer from Keefe and an offensive putback from Ortman. They held the eight point lead to the final buzzer.
Lahti added 17 points to the total and
Brett Ahsenmacher grabbed six rebounds, second of the team behind Ortman who snagged seven.
The Golden Eagles were led by Connor Camble who had 14 points and two players, Harrison Cleary and Chase Johnson added 11 each.
The Blue Devils will start the UW-Stout Tip Off Classic on Friday at 7 p.m. against Hope College.
