LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT: The Blue Devils lost, 35-28 to UW-Stevens Point, Nov. 5. The Blue Devils kept the game close for the majority of the game trading leads throughout the game, even owning a 28-27 lead heading into the fourth, but were unable to score in the fourth eventually losing the game. Noel Gonzalez returned a kickoff 96 yards for a score in the third quarter to put the Blue Devils right back into the game. | Stats and Story

LAST TIME OUT: UW-WHITEWATER: The Warhawks played catch-up all afternoon, taking their only lead of the game on their opening series in overtime in a 27-20 overtime win over visiting UW-River Falls, the Warhawks closest call the entire season. The Warhawks had to fight out of a first half hole and then needed overtime to defeat a pesky UW-River Falls team, 27-20 last weekend at home. Senior quarterback Chris Nelson ran in for a six-yard touchdown on UW-Whitewater's first drive of overtime and accounted for all 25 yards on the drive on running plays. The Falcons had first-and-goal from the Warhawk 9-yard line on the ensuing possession, but on second down, UW-Whitewater forced a fumble and junior linebacker Matt Seitz recovered to secure the victory. The Warhawks scored an early field in the game, but River Falls responded with touchdowns on back-to-back possessions to take a 12-3 advantage, the Warhawks' largest deficit of the season to date. At one point, River Falls had a 20-10 lead. | Stats and Story

WHEN STOUT AND WHITEWATER LAST MET: The Warhawks defeated UW-Stout. 63-14, Nov. 14, 2015 in Whitewater. The Warhawks (9-1, 6-1 WIAC) ran off to a 14-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game, but Stout cut the lead in half midway through the first period.Freshman quarterback Jay Alston led a 14-play, 5-minute, 33-second, 76-yard drive. Alston completed 5-of-8 passes in the drive, including a 24-yard pass to Jordan Dabney on third down early in the drive to move the chains. Alston completed the drive by finding Chris Pica-Anderson for an eight-yard score and Stout trailed 14-7. It was all Whitewater after that as the Warhawks would finish with 595 yards of total offense for the game, scoring the next seven TDs to take a 63-7 lead. | Stats and Story

THE SERIES: The Warhawks lead the series 47-10-2. The Warhawks have won the last 14 meetings between the two teams, with the last UW-Stout win coming in 2001.

WHO'S WHO: UW-Stout: Jay Alston had another good game as he started for the Blue Devils once again. He threw for two touchdowns and 247 yards on 18 completions. He also provided 17 yards on the ground after seven carries. The combination of quarterbacks was not seen in the game against Stevens Point, this happened for only the second time all season. Alston is 116-for-229 for 1556 yards and 12 TDs.

CATCHING THE BALL: Brian Sandifer stood out once again for the Blue Devils, leading the team in receptions as well as TD receptions for the second game in a row. He was able to hall in his two short TD catches (one for six yards the other for five) on drives in the first and second quarters. Kevion McDonald also had a good game for Stout, providing a deep threat as he hauled in 94 yards on only four receptions.

On the season, Jordan Dabney leads the team with 35 catches for 661 yards and five TDs with a 73.4 yards per game. Chris Pica-Anderson has 29 grabs for 284 yards, one TD and a 31.60 yards per catch average. In the last two games, Sandifer has tied Dabney with five TD receptions on the season, leading the team. Sandifer opened the season with a single catch in each of the first two games. Over the last three games, Sandifer has caught 14 passes, four against River Falls, five against Platteville and five against Stevens Point. He had a TD vs. River Falls and two each against the Pioneers and the Pointers.

RUNNING THE BALL: The Blue Devil rushing committee was lackluster against Stevens Point. Travis Urlaub got the majority of the rushes, gaining 50 yards and one TD on 13 carries. Alston rushed for 17 yards on seven carries and Adolfo Pacheco gained only four yards on three carries.

Senior offensive lineman Kane'ala Atchison-Keolanui got his number in the stat column against River Falls, rushing the ball on a fourth and one opportunity.

PERSISTENT PACHECO: Adolfo Pacheco earned the number one running back position three weeks ago and has used this opportunity to continue to work his way in to the record book, while also having one of the better games of his career. Against Eau Claire was his fifth best game in terms of yards-per-game. He was able to pass his sophomore best by a single yard. The highlight of the game for Pacheco was his 85-yard TD run at the beginning of the third quarter, the scamper was the longest of his career. Pacheco was able to surpass two more Stout rushers on the all-time list in a game against Eau Claire. He passed Andy Reese (1894 yards, 2004-2007) and Nick Ohman (1925 yards, 2001-2004) in the record book; he is currently seventh with 2080 yards, he needs 31 yards to pass Rich Vargas (1990-92) who sits at 2110 yards.

O-LINE: A season after giving up six total sacks, the Blue Devil offensive line has given up 14 sacks so far this season. But blitz-happy St.Thomas had a lot to do with, as the Tommies pressed the Blue Devils for four sacks. It has taken a little bit of time to get the offensive line's chemistry back, considering that the team played a variety of different linemen due to injuries. Preseason All-American Kane'ala Atchinson-Keolanui and Logan Stoa continue to be the biggest contributors for the line, protecting the blindside of quarterbacks Alston and Farley.

DEFENSE: Junior safety Tony Blair leads the team and the WIAC in tackles, with almost double the amount of his next tackler. Blair has 90 (56 solo, 34 assisted) on the season, while senior linebacker Josh Robinson is second on the team with 50 (28 solo, 22 assisted). Stout was able to keep the Pointers at bay for most of the game. They gave up a lot of yards through the air, but were able to stop the Pointer attack when it counted. Stout forced a fumble on the day as well as disrupt the back field; they recorded five tackles for a loss, totaling 14 yards.

BALL HAWKS: Stout safety Enzo Rosani is second WIAC in interceptions this season, snagging three picks on the year. The safety position anchors the team on defense being the eyes of the defense and quarterbacking the defensive team. Senior cornerback Javauhn Staley is second in the WIAC in pass break-ups and passes defended with eight total. The other corner position held by LaRon Thompson, has also helped the Blue Devils; Thompson recorded his first career interception against La Crosse. He was able to rip the ball from the wideout on a long pass down the sideline. Freshman Darius Huntley was also able to record his first career interception this season; against Platteville he jumped a crossing route and snagged the ball in mid air. Stout had two picks against Stevens Point, Tony Rudesill got a mitt up and snagged his first interception off of the defensive line, while Thompson got his second career interception.

GIVE IT A BOOT: Punter Clark Riedel has punted the ball 48 times in five games, for a total of 1890 yards, averaging 39.4 yards per kick, ranking third in the WIAC. Riedel really showed off his skill against Eau Claire, he was able to match his season total by pinning five punts inside the 20 yard line, including balls on the seven, five and four yardlines. He dropped a punt inside the 20 against Platteville too, bringing his season total to 11 inside the 20 yardline. Quarterback Jay Alston executed a nearly perfect pooch kick, going 37 yards and rolling the ball out at the 1-yard line against Simpson College.

The return team for the Blue Devils made a big impact against Stevens Point. Noel Gonzalez got the Blue Devil third quarter started with a bang, as he returned a kick for 96 yards and a score. This was the longest return for Stout since the 1995 season.

ON A TEE: Pearson is 13-of-15 for field goals. Pearson also kept his PATs perfect, nailing all three attempts to go 26-for-26. Pearson has tallied 65 points, fourth among all players in the WIAC and first among kickers. Pearson is currently sixth nationally in field goals per game (1.44) and 11th nationally in field goal percentage (.867).

The longest kick of his career weighed in at 52 yards in the waning seconds of the first half against Mayville State, Sept. 17. The kick was only two yards short of the school record. The last time a UW-Stout player kicked a 50-plus yard field goal was Oct. 20, 2007 when Brandon Raciborski gave Stout a 28-27 win over UW-River Falls. Against St. Thomas, Taylor Pahl kicked off four times and recorded a total of 258 yards (64.5 yds/kick), this total included one touchback. Pearson is one of only a handful of Stout players to kick a 50-plus yard field goal and is likely the only Blue Devil to kick two in the same season. Pearson currently leads the WIAC in field goal percentage (.867) and number of field goals made (13).

Pearson continued his 50-yard field goal ways against Oshkosh. He knocked in a 51-yarder around the 13-minute mark in the second quarter. This was something that hadn't happened since 1996. Since 1996, only six UW-Stout kickers have attempted field goals of 50-yards or longer, and only three kickers have attempted two 50-yards plus in a single season. With Pearson drilling his second 50-yard field goal, a 51-yarder in the first half, he is the only Stout kicker to make two 50-plus yard field goals in a single season since at least 1990. (Additional records are not readily available). Pearson is on the Fred Mitchell Award watch list, a list that consists of kickers on all levels of the NCAA and NAIA.

PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished seventh in the competitive WIAC last season and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish seventh again this year.

WHO'S WHO UW-WHITEWATER: The Warhawks clinched at least a share of the WIAC title and secured the NCAA Division III automatic bid. The Warhawks have been ranked second to Mount Union all season. They are in the top three in the WIAC in a ton of categories. The Warhawks lead the WIAC in: rushing defense, turnover margin, sacks and kickoff. Sophomore running back Drew Patterson leads the WIAC in scoring (102 pts), averaging 11.2 points per game and scoring 17 TDs (13 rushing, four receiving) on the season. Patterson is just short of a 1000-yard season, running for 974 yards (5.8 yd/g). Jarrod Ware has run for 419 yards (5.0 y/g) and three scores. The Warhawks' Cole Wilber has completed 99-of-182 passes for 1369 yards, 10 TDs and only four interceptions. Chris Nelson has completed 31-of-62 passes for 518 yards, five TDs and two Iinterceptions. Leading receiver is Marcus Hudson with 34 catches for 568 yards (16.7 y/catch) and three scored. Tony Gumina (24 catches, 248 yds) and Canton Larson (16 catches, 178 yds) both have caught three TD passes.  On defense, Alex Zacharius leads the WIAC in fumbles forced, with three. Colin Buck has six interceptions and Vince Mason four.  Buck returned one INT 79 yards for a score.  The Warhawks play defense that doesn't show off statistically, but gets it done in the trenches. With a victory this Saturday at UW-Stout, UW-Whitewater can clinch its 18th unbeaten regular season in program history. The Warhawks have seven perfect regular seasons since 2005, with the most recent coming in 2014. Including postseason games, the program has had five undefeated seasons since 2009, all of which resulted in national titles (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014). | Statistics

BIG KICKOFF RETURNS: Noel Gonzalez returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown against UW-Stevens Point, Nov. 5, 2016 at Stevens Point. The return was the longest return since Mike Bechtel returned a 98-yard kickoff return against UW-Whitewater, Oct. 14?, 1995 on the Blue Devils' homecoming. Carlos Concepcion returned a kick 90 yards against UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 23, 2010. Jesse Wendt, who holds the school single season record for kickoff return average, returned a kickoff 90 yards in 2004??? Tony Beckham did not have any 90-plus yard returns, but in back-to-back seasons, the future NFL draftee returned an 88-yard kickoff and an 89-yard return in 2000 and 2001, respectively.

FIELD GOAL BLOCK & RETURN: During the 2015 season, Travis Shackleton blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt by UW-La Crosse in La Crosse, Oct. 10, 2015, and Enzo Rosani scooped up the ball on the La Crosse 14, returning it 86 yards for a score. The blocked kick was Shackleton's first career block and the touchdown was Rosani's first collegiate TD. There is no mention in the UW-Stout, the WIAC or the NCAA record books for returning blocked field goal attempts. There will now be a category in the Stout record book. After sending out a request to NCAA Division III sports information directors, the following list of blocked field goals was compiled.

MAX SPARGER: UW-Stout dedicated the Don & Nona Williams Stadium press box in honor of former UW-Stout athletic director and coach Max Sparger, September 11, 2010. Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season. | A 10-week series on Stout football is available.

DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: The Blue Devils' home stadium - Don & Nona Williams Stadium - got a facelift during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembles natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. Only the Wisconsin Badgers played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, nearly every WIAC school either has or is planning an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.
