MENOMONIE (October 29, 2016) - For the diehard UW-Stout football fans who hung around through the light rain during the game, they got to see a few Blue Devils fireworks.
UW-Platteville rolled up a 48-6 lead before the Blue Devils were able to put a touchdown on the board, but once they started, they piled up three TDs in a 55-27 loss to the 11th ranked Pioneers Saturday at Don and Nona Williams Stadium.
The Blue Devils (3-5, 1-4 WIAC) got on the board first. Following a 24 yard kickoff return by
Chase Fanelle to open the game, the Blue Devils tallied 45 yards in nine plays, setting kicker
Drew Pearson up for a successful 48 yard field goal. The tank went empty for Stout after that until late in the game.
The Pioneers (6-2, 3-2 WIAC) rolled off five TDs through the first half and into the second half to take a 34-3 lead before Stout got another 48 yard boot from Pearson at 10:12 in the third quarter. The Pioneers tacked on two more scores to make it 48-6 before Stout got going.
The Blue Devils drove 77 yards in nine plays, capped off by a 19-yard TD reception by
Brian Sandifer from
Jay Alston with one second left on the clock in the third period. The duo hooked up again early in the final quarter. This time, Alston drove his time 73 yards in nine plays, again finding a leaping Sandifer for a 28-yard score.
The Pioneers did get another score to make it 55-20, at 6:43. Bbut Stout needed just short of two minutes to put their final score on the board behind quarterback
Danny Farley. The transfer used three passes to move Stout down the field 78 yards. Farley connected with Sandifer on back-to-back passes, a 12 yard pass and a 40 yard pass to the Platteville 26. Farley found
Kevion McDonald in the end zone to cap off the drive with a 26 yard play.
Platteville had fireworks throughout the game. Quarterback Tom Kelly threw for 374 yards and a whopping six TDs. Kelly was 24-of-34 with no interceptions, although the Blue Devil defense did sack him three times.
Isaiah Hardy got to Kelly twice and freshman
Luke Wilz once.
Quinn Buschbacher pulled in 10 passes for 86 yards and a score. Dan Arnold had six catches for 137 yards and TD plays of 30- and 46-yards. Dillon Villhauer made five receptions for 87 yards and two TDs of 14- and 40-yards.
Platteville finished the game with 565 total yards of offense, 382 in the air and 183 on the ground. Sean Studer carried the ball 15 times for 102 yards and a TD and Wyatt Thompson had 63 yards on seven carries and a score.
While Stout finished with 398 yards of total offense, they had only 126 yards at halftime. The Blue Devils were plagued by turnovers, fumbling the ball away twice and getting intercepted once.
Alston completed 13-of-28 passes for 161 yards and two TDs..He was sacked once. Sandifer finished with five catches and 101 yards, along with his career-best two TDs. McDonald pulled down six catches for 85 yards.
The sophomore kicker Pearson was flawless again, booting the two 48-yard field goals and making all three PATs. Pearson is now 13-of-15 in field goals and has made all 22 extra point attempts for 61 points.
Stout will be at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Nov. 6 with a 1 p.m. start.
