MENOMONIE (October 28, 2016) - UW-Stevens Point swept past UW-Stout, but the Blue Devils had some fight left in them for the third set, coming back from a five point deficit to take the lead before succumbing, 25-22, 25-14, 26-24.
The 17th ranked Pointers (25-6, 3-3 WIAC), who came into the match trailing the Blue Devils by one match in the conference standings, built a 22-17 lead in the final set and looked like they were going easily push the Blue Devils (15-12, 3-3 WIAC) out of the way.
Olivia Jung connected on back-to-back kills to make it 22-19. Jung teamed with
Kennedy Strain to block an attack to make it 22-20. The Pointers commtted an attack errors and Jung smacked down back-to-back kills again to give Stout the lead - actually Stout's only of the entire night.
The Pointers' Kelly Cefula tied the score with a kills, but a kill by Jung gave Stout the lead again, 24-23, but that wuold be it for the Blue Devils as the Pointers took the match with a couple of kills and a Blue Devil error.
Cefula led all players with 18 kills, including seven apiece in both the second and third sets. Ellen Drewry finished with 11 kills. Cefula recorded three block assists. Drewry had a solo block and two block assists. Kelly Magliano had a solo block and two block assists.
Stout got seven kills each from Jung and
Ashley Pratt.
Kennedy Strain finished with three block assists.
The Blue Devils will host UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Oct. 29 at noon in the final regular season home match.
