LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT:  For every score that Stout had, it seemed like River Falls was able to answer with two or more scores. Quarterback Jay Alston was the leader in practically every offensive statistic, leading the team in passing yards with 289 and four TDs and rushing yards with 45. Stout's defense was able to disrupt the River Falls offense just slightly, with three tackles for loss, but the Falcons were too much as they went on to a 50-28 win, scoring on offense, defense and special teams. | Stats and Story

LAST TIME OUT: UW-PLATTEVILLE: The 11th  ranked Pioneers faced the fifth ranked Oshkosh Titans in a Titan homecoming game. The game was a defensive stalemate through third quarters with neither team reaching the end zone. The teams were only able to get field goals on the board until the fourth quarter, the Pioneers having six points heading into the fourth and the Titans having nine points. The two teams traded touchdowns at the beginning of the fourth quarter, making it a 15-13 game, but the Titans had the last laugh, scoring once more around the six minute mark and then running down the clock. The Pioneers lost 22-13 | Stats and Story

WHEN STOUT AND PLATTEVILLE LAST MET: In their last match up against the Pioneers last season, the Blue Devils fell 43-10 on the road. Stout was shutout by a good Platteville defense; the Pioneers were able to shutdown a high velocity Blue Devil passing offense from Hank Kujak. In the game, Kujak was held under 200 yards passing and did not throw a touchdown in the game. Pioneer quarterback Tom Kelly was able to throw for five scores and 273 yards on the day.  | Stats and Story

THE SERIES: The Pioneers hold a lead in the series 25-23-1.  Since the 2000 season, the series is tied at 8-8, but the Pioneers have won the last five contests. Stout's last win over the Pioneers came in the 2010 season, a 28-23 decision at Platteville. Stout's last win over the Pioneers at Williams Stadium came in 2009, a 43-10 win.

WHO'S WHO: UW-Stout: Coach Birmingham has been using a combination of quarterback Jay Alston's arm and legs to help give the offense a boost. In the last  two games he has rushed for more than 140 yards and two scores while also throwing the ball for 441 yards and four scores. Alston has been showing spirts of the form he had at the beginning of the season.

Farley again saw limited action against the River Falls going 4-for-11 and 42 yards through the air.

CATCHING THE BALL: Jordan Dabney had a comeback game against the Falcons, even though the team was on the losing end. Dabney caught his first touchdown pass since the second game of the season when Stout faced St. Thomas, he was also able to snag 145 yards through the air, his second highest total on the season and his second 100-yard receiving game of the year. Brian Sandifer, who has seen limited action on the season also had a break out game, he caught four balls for 62 yards which included a 22-yard TD catch.

On the season, Dabney has 32 catches for 626 yards and five TDs with a 89.3 yards per game. Chris Pica-Anderson has 21 grabs for 219 yards, one TD and a 10.43 per catch average. Adolfo Pacheco caught two balls and a score last week against River Falls.

RUNNING THE BALL: The rushing attack seemed stagnant again last week against River Falls. Stout managed only 95 yards on the ground, just after coming off a week when they ran for 289 yards. Pachecho held his number one running back spot for the second week in a row, but was unable to make a large impact like he did the game prior. Pacheco was the Blue Devils' leading running back, netting 32 yards on nine attempts. Travis Urlaub has been seeing consistent action along side Pacheco, but like Pacheco had little impact against the Falcon defense, rushing for 18 yards on five carries.

Senior offensive lineman Kane'ala Atchison-Keolanui got his number in the stat column against Platteville, rushing the ball on a fourth and one opportunity.

PERSISTENT PACHECO: Adolfo Pacheco earned the number one running back position two weeks and used this oppertunity to continue to work his way in to the record book, while also having one of the better games of his career. Against Eau Claire was his fifth best game in terms of yards-per-game. He was able to pass his sophomore best by a single yard. The highlight of the game for Pacheco was his 85-yard TD run at the beginning of the third quarter, the scamper was the longest of his career. Pacheco was able to surpass two more Stout rushers on the all-time list in a game against Eau Claire. He passed  Andy Reese (1894 yards, 2004-2007) and Nick Ohman (1925 yards, 2001-2004) in the record book; he is currently seventh with 1989 yards.

O-LINE: A season after giving up six total sacks, the Blue Devil offensive line has given up 13 sacks so far this season. But blitz-happy St.Thomas had a lot to do with, as the Tommies pressed the Blue Devils for four sacks. It has taken a little bit of time to get the offensive line's chemistry back, considering that the team played a variety of different linemen due to injuries. Preseason All-American Kane'ala Atchinson-Keolanui and Logan Stoa continue to be the biggest contributors for the line, protecting the blindside of quarterbacks Alston and Farley.

DEFENSE: Junior safety Tony Blair still leads the team in tackles, with almost double the amount of the next tackler. Blair has 62 (39 solo, 23 assissted) on the season, while senior linebacker Josh Robinson is second on the team with 38 (23 solo, 15 assisted). Stout wasn't able to disrupt the River Falls backfield as much as they did against Eau Claire, but they got a few shots at the QB when they could. Isaiah Hardy was able to sack the elusive Sawyer Moon to make that 5.0 sacks on the season, second on the team behind his high school teammate Iyen Ogbomoh who has 5.5 total sacks.

BALL HAWKS: Stout safety Enzo Rosani is second WIAC in interceptions this season, snagging three picks on the year. Safety opposite of Blair also leads the WIAC in tackles with 62. The safety position anchors the team on defense being the eyes of the defense and quarterbacking the defensive team. Senior cornerback Javauhn Staley is second in the WIAC in pass break-ups an passes defended with eight total. The other corner positon held by Laron Thompson, has also helped the Blue Devils; Thompson recorded his first career interception last week against La Crosse. He was able to rip the ball from the wideout on a long pass down the sideline. They were able to do more damage against the Blugolds. The defensive backfield held Eau Claire's best receiver Matt Knapp to only one catch for two yards. With help from their pass rushers, the backfield also allowed only eight pass completions.

GIVE IT A BOOT: Punter Clark Riedel has punted the ball 41 times in five games, for a total of 1609 yards, averaging 39.24 yards per kick, ranking third in the WIAC. Riedel really showed off his skill against Eau Claire, he was able to match his season total by pinning five punts inside the 20 yard line, including balls on the seven, five and four yardlines. This brings his season total to 10 inside the 20 yardline. Quarterback Jay Alston executed a nearly perfect pooch kick, going 37 yards and rolling the ball out at the 1-yard line against Simpson College.

ON A TEE: Field goal kicker Drew Pearson has gone 11-for-13 on the season, nailing all of his field goals under 30 yards, and all 12 of his PAT attempts. The longest kick of his career weighed in at 52 yards in the waning seconds of the first half against Mayville State, Sept. 17. The kick was only two yards short of the school record. The last time a UW-Stout player kicked a 50-plus yard field goal was Oct. 20, 2007 when Brandon Raciborski gave Stout a 28-27 win over UW-River Falls. Against St. Thomas, Taylor Pahl kicked off four times and recorded a total of 258 yards (64.5 yds/kick), this total included one touchback. Pearson is one of only a handful of Stout players to kick a 50-plus yard field goal and is likely the only Blue Devil to kick two in the same season. Pearson currently leads the WIAC in field goal percentage (.845) and number of field goals made (11).

Pearson continued his 50-yard field goal ways against Oshkosh. He knocked in a 51-yarder around the 13-minute mark in the second quarter. This was something that hadn't happened since 1996. Since 1996, only six UW-Stout kickers have attempted field goals of 50-yards or longer, and only three kickers have attempted two 50-yards plus in a single season. With Pearson drilling his second 50-yard field goal, a 51-yarder in the first half, he is the only Stout kicker to make two 50-plus yard field goals in a single season since at least 1990. (Additional records are not readily available). Pearson is on the Fred Mitchell Award watch list, a list that consists of kickers on all levels of the NCAA and NAIA.

Pearson continued to give it a boot against Eau Claire, going 3-for-3 and nailing 27, 42 and 47-yard field goals.

PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished seventh in the competitive WIAC last season and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish seventh again this year.

WHO'S WHO UW-PLATTEVILLE: The Pioneers are currently ranked 18th in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll and 11th in the latest D3football.com Top 25 poll. They rely heavily on their passing offense and good defense to win games. The Pioneers rank first in the WIAC and 32nd in the nation in passing yards, relying on the arm of senior quarterback Tom Kelly. Platteville's only two losses on the season came against WIAC ranked opponents no. 2 Whitewater and no. 5 Oshkosh, but in all of their wins they have scored 25 points or more. Platteville recievers Quinn Buschbacher and Dan Arnold are first and second in the WIAC in receptions per game, Buschbacher in first with 6.71 and Arnold in second with 5.71. Buschbacher also ranks first in kick return average, gaining about 30.2 per return. On defense junior linebacker Marty McGrail is tied for second in the WIAC in tackles with 54 total. McGrail along with free safety Patrick Swanson hold the record for tackles in a game this season with 16; McGrail's 16 came against a loss to Whitewater and Swanson's 16 came in a win against River Falls Oct. 15. | Statistics

MAX SPARGER: UW-Stout dedicated the Don & Nona Williams Stadium press box in honor of former UW-Stout athletic director and coach Max Sparger, September 11, 2010. Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season. | A 10-week series on Stout football is available.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils will be at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m.
