Blue Devil softball season ends at WIAC tournament

UW-Oshkosh 3, UW-Stout 0 | UW-River Falls 14, UW-Stout 2 (5 inn)

EAU CLAIRE (May 2, 2015) - A day after turning out a glorious upset of second seeded UW-Whitewater, UW-Stout could find little offense as their season came to an end with two losses at the WIAC Softball Championship at Carson Park Saturday. The Blue Devils lost 3-0 to UW-Oshkosh in the first game of the day, then bowed out in five innings in a 14-2 loss to UW-River Falls.

After pounding out 14 hits and nine runs against Whitewater on Friday, the Blue Devils could muster three hits and no runs against the Titans and only two hits and two runs against the Falcons.

The Blue Devils' Tori Workman racked up eight strikeouts against the Titans and scattered nine hits, while giving up two earned runs.

The Titans (30-10) got on the board first when Emily Mallek opened second with a double, then came home on Brianna Witter's single. Mallek would score the Titans' final run of the game, that coming in the third inning when Kimberly Lohre drove her home.

Stout (16-27) only managed six base runners and only got one runner as far as third base.

Against River Falls (23-21), Stout committed five of their season-high six errors in the second inning and gave up seven runs.

To the Blue Devils' tribute, they did bounce back with a two-run effort in the bottom of the inning. Karley Wiensch drove in both runs on a triple to center field.

But that would be it for Stout and the Falcons were just getting started. River Falls scored a run in the third to make it 8-2, then added four in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Workman got tagged with the loss, giving up 10 runs, but only four earned, on seven hits. She did notch three strikeouts to run her season total to 158, two shy of the single season record she set last season. For her career, Workman has 397 strikeouts, trailing only Karen Lien's 409, set from 1992-95.
