UW-Whitewater takes a pair of games on first day of series

MENOMONIE (May 2, 2015) - UW-Whitewater got a pair of complete game efforts from their pitchers as the Warhawks swept UW-Stout, 10-4 6-1, Saturday at Nelson Field.

The Warhawk duo of Lake Bachar and Mike Nompleggi kept the Blue Devils off the scoreboard until late in both games.

In game one, the Warhawks tallied three times in the top of the first to take an early lead. Mikole Pierce scored the first run with a double to right field, and Steve Chamberlain doubled the lead two batters later with an infield single. Pierce came around to score on a groundout.
 
Trey Cannon made it 4-0 in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly. He knocked in another run in the fourth with a one-out base hit. Mike Mierow tacked on a run in the fifth with a run-scoring single up the middle.and single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings.

Stout got on the board in the sixth inning after two outs. Brady Burzynski was hit by a pitch. Jack Schneider walked and Nick Nalbach singled up the middle to drive home Burzynski. Charlie Meyer followed up with a three run home run, his fifth of the season.

Whitewater added three runs in seventh and another in the eighth. With two outs, senior right fielder Kyle Haen drew a bases-loaded walk and Kuhlmann followed with a two-run base hit to right. Pierce led off the top of the eighth with a solo homer, his seventh of the year, to account for the final margin.Whitewater punched out 14 hits, as Each of the Warhawks' first five hitters collected two hits. while Stout finished the game with three hits.

Bachar allowed three hits and struck out six for the win.

In the second game, Whitewater scored twice in the opening stanza on RBIs by Casey Power and Mike Mierow. Both teams stayed off the board until Power drove in a run in the fifth inning and the Warhawks held a 3-0 lead.

Stout got their only run of the game in the seventh inning. Noah Brown breached on an infield hit, then moved to third on Kasey Kruse's double to left field. Tyler Nalbach's ground out brought Brown home.

Whitewater scored three more runs in the eighth inning. A bases-loaded wild pitch brought in one run and Mikole Pierce drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle.

Whitewater pounded out 15 hits to Stout's six. Nompleggi recorded his first complete game of the season, striking out five and walked two.

The teams are slated to meet again Sunday, May 3, with a change in time to an 11 a.m. start.
