Offense lacks punch as Blue Devils lose to Pioneers

UW-Platteville 43, UW-Stout 10

PLATTEVILLE (October 31, 2015) - It was a tale of two games as UW-Stout produced only 10 points in their 43-10 loss to UW-Platteville Saturday. This came after scoring 48 points in the previous week against UW-River Falls.

Stout managed only 14 first downs and 57 plays total, compared to Platteville's 35 first downs and 95 total plays. Lack of opportunity for the Blue Devils was the real difference. Platteville's defense stood strong against the normally high velocity offense of the Blue Devils. Stout scored their only points in the second half. A 41-yard field goal by Drew Pearson (Fr, Wausau) late in the third quarter made the score 43-3. This was followed by a three-yard run by Adolfo Pacheco (Jr, South Elgin, Ill) in the fourth quarter. the game ended 43-10 with the Pioneers on top.

Stout totaled 130 yards of offense on the ground and 138 yards through the air. Blue Devil quarterback Hank Kujak (Sr, Blair) was held to less than 200 yards passing for only the second time this season. Kujak was 10-of-24 for 138 yards, his lowest output of the season. Kujak was held without a passing TD for the first time this season.

Pioneer quarterback Tom Kelly was 20-for-30 for 273 yards and five TDs. He was intercepted twice, once by linebacker Kyle Hoefft (Sr, Morton, Ill) and once by defensive back Michael Pierson (So, Lino Lakes, Minn). Junior receiver Quinn Buschbacher was Kelly's main target amassing 156 yards off of 12 targets and put up three scores.

Hoefft finished with a team-high 15 tackles, nine solo. DeVaughn Miller (Fr, Zion, Ill) saw his first extended action at defensive back and recorded 10 tackles, three solo.

The Blue Devils will look to get their offense running in full gear in their final home game of the year next weekend. They play UW-Stevens Point Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. for Military Appreciation Day and for Senior Day.
