Soccer Preview: Busy week for Blue Devils with three games on docket

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (6-5-3, 2-3-1 WIAC) will be at Gustavus Adolphus College (9-4-1, 7-1-0 MIAC), Wednesday, Oct. 21 for a 4 p.m. kickoff. Stout returns home to close out the home portion of the schedule, hosting UW-Whitewater (13-3, 4-1 WIAC), Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. and UM-Morris (6-6-0, 5-3-0 UMAC), Sunday, Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m. The Morris game will be Senior Day.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout scored in the final seconds of the game to force overtime and the Blue Devils went on to snap a four-game winless streak with a 1-1 tie at UW-River Falls, Oct. 14.  | UW-River Falls Complete Story and Stats

A LOOK AT UW-STOUT: The Blue Devils broke a four-game losing streak with the tie with UW-River Falls last week. Sydney Kasper's goal late in the game broke a scoreless streak that stretched back to the 64th minute of a 3-1 win over UW-Platteville, Sept. 26. The Blue Devil defense has been relatively stingy during the stretch, giving up one goal to UW-Oshkosh and one goal to UW-La Crosse. The Blue Devils have given up two goals against UW-Eau Claire and two goals in a non-conference loss to Hamline University.  Paige Meyer has played all of the minutes between the pipes and has a goals against average of 0.87, still good for fourth in the conference. The freshman Kasper leads the team in scoring with four goals and an assist, while Addy Maher is the team's points leader with three goals and four assists.   Jenna Kizlik has scored three goals and added three assists. Megan Collins, Sarah Todey and Kelly Conn each have two goals, with Conn and Collins each recording an assist. Collins has scored all of her points since moving up to the midfield. Lindsey Concon has come off the bench to add two assists and defender Haley Wentz has two assists, the first of her collegiate career. Camille Fawcett also has an assist. The Blue Devils have scored 16 total goals and have given up 13.  The Blue Devils were picked to finish fourth in a WIAC preseason poll and currently are fifth with three games remaining.| 2015 Stats

ON THE RIGHT PAIGE: When UW-Platteville scored in the 78th minute of UW-Stout's 3-1 win at UW-Platteville, the goal stopped the longest scoreless streak in Blue Devil goalkeeper Paige Meyer's collegiate career. After allowing a goal in double overtime to Viterbo University, Sept. 16, Meyer did not allow a goal for 358 minutes, four games later at Platteville. So far this season, Meyer has five shutouts. Charla Buxbaum (2005) and Melissa Ballweg (2002) share the season record for most shutouts with eight. Ballweg (2001-04) holds the career shutout record with 21. Meyer currently has 13 career shutouts, second on the all-time list. The teams from 2003, 2004 and 2005 produced 10 shutouts each season.


A LOOK AT GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS: The Gusties have done quite a turnaround from last season. The Gusties last season finished at 2-13-3 overall, but this year, after going winless in their first four games (0-3-1), the Gusties have won nine of their last 10 games, with their only loss, a one-point, 4-3 loss at Carleton College Oct. 3. Maddison Ackiss has scored a team-high eight goals and has added an assist.  Hannah Sturtz has five goals.  Brittany Chase has three goals and five assists and Sophie Leininger has a team-high nine assists with one goal. Ashley Becker has played every minute in goal and has a GAA of 1.04. Becker has allowed only one goal over the last four games.  | 2015 Stats

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS THE LAST TIME OUT:The Gustavus women's soccer team earned its fourth straight victory with a 3-0 shutout over Bethel on Saturday afternoon at the Gustie Soccer Field. Gustavus was able to get on the scoreboard early when junior midfielder Coursey Edwards (Eden Prarie, Minn.) put one home just 3:12 into the first half to score her second goal of the season  | Story and Stats

THE LAST TIME STOUT AND GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS MET:Lauren Kizlik recorded her only collegiate hat trick as UW-Stout roared past Gustavus Adolphus, 6-2, on a wet and windy night at Nelson Field. Kizlik took six total shots on the night, missing on her first three before sending the next three into the back of the net. | Story and Stats


 A LOOK AT UW-WHITEWATER: As a team, the Warhawks are leading the conference in scoring, averaging 3.25 goals in all games and 3.00 goals in conference games only. Brianna Reid leads the WIAC in goals, putting in 16 markers, and also has two assists. Carly Pottle has nine goals and two assists. Karina Rosales provides a spark off the bench, scoring six goals and four assists. Fifteen players have scored at least one goal or more and eight players have scored two or more goals. Erin Doody has worked the majority of the games in the goal and has a 13-3-0 record with a 1.04 GAA and two shutouts.  | 2015 Stats

UW-WHITEWATER THE LAST TIME OUT: The 14th ranked Warhawks saw a 33-game WIAC regular season winning streak come to an end Oct. 17 with a 1-0 overtime home loss to UW-La Crosse. The setback drops the Warhawks to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the WIAC. The Eagles take over first place in the league with an overall record of 12-3 and a league record of 5-0.  The loss snaps the league's longest unbeaten streak dating back to 2002. The Warhawks had not lost a WIAC game since September 24, 2011. Head Coach Ryan Quamme had never lost a league game in his four seasons at the helm of the Warhawks. |  Complete Story and Stats

THE LAST TIME STOUT AND UW-WHITEWATER MET: UW-Whitewater scored in the 102nd minute to edge past UW-Stout, 1-0, in a WIAC contest Oct. 18, 2014, at Finske Field.  A LOOK AT UM-MORRIS: Molly Hancuh leads the Cougars with 12 goals, four assists and has three of the Cougars' game-winning goals. Yu Ito has chipped in six goals and two assists, while Carly Denler has five goals and an assist and Ivie Brooks has three goals. Torie Jordan has a GAA of 1.98 with a saves percentage of .779.  | 2015 Stats

UM-MORRIS THE LAST TIME OUT: Yu Ito tied a school record with four goals and Molly Hancuh added three goals and three assists in the Cougars 10-0 victory over Crown College. Minnesota Morris  scored six times in the first half to blow out the Storm, Oct. 17. AWARDS: Sarah Todey was the UW-Stout/Northwestern Mutual athlete of the week after a two goal week, including the game winner in double overtime against St. Scholastica...Nikky Sedivy earned WIAC defensive player of the week honors after the opening week of the season as Stout allowed only one goal in two overtime ties...Addy Maher was the Blue Devils offensive player of the week and Nikki Sedivy was the defensive player of the week after the first week of the season...2014: Jenna Kizlik and Vanessa Wrobel were all-WIAC selections, Kizlik for the second consecutive season...Paige Meyer was the WIAC defensive player of the week Oct. 21 after holding nationally ranked UW-Whitewater to one goal in double overtime.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Blue Devil team captains for the 2015 season are Sarah Ulrich, Vanessa Wrobel and Jenna Kizlik.

UW-STOUT COACH RYAN RAUFUS: Coach Ryan Raufus (36-39-11) is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Raufus played his college ball at Springfield College in Massachusetts and came to Stout after coaching at La Crosse Logan High School and La Crescent, Minn., High School.

QUICK HITS: The Blue Devils posted five shutouts last year, but were kept off the scoreboard 11 times. Stout had two offensive breakouts, a 6-0 conference win over UW-Superior and a 6-2 non-conference win over Gustavus Adolphus. The Blue Devils were in the middle of the conference pack in just about every offensive and defensive statistical category.

TWENTY YEARS OF BLUE DEVIL SOCCER: After many years as a club sport, UW-Stout became the ninth WIAC team to join the varsity ranks during the 1995 season. The Blue Devils took their lumps to open the season, making their premiere by hosting Augsburg College, Sept. 10, in a 7-0 loss. Stout opened the conference season three days later at Nelson Field, hosting perennial conference powerhouse UW-Stevens Point, dropping a 6-0 decision. The Blue Devils finally broke onto the scoreboard in their third game. While hosting UW-Platteville, Sept. 17, Kari Stapleton scored in the 70th minute on an assist from Jenny Tyson in a 2-1 loss. The Blue Devils would get their first-ever win, a 3-0 decision at Martin Luther College, Sept. 23, collecting goals from Amie Frasier, Tyson and Joann Sognesand. Defender Andrea Schroeder was a second team all-conference selection in 1995, then was selected to the first team in 1996.

Members of that first 1995 team include: April Amys, Beeta Bastani, Tammy Beuch, Carrie Blaska, Jen Chapple, Michelle Coon, Amie Frasier, Aimee Grimm, Jamie Jester, Julie Kremer, Dorian Loberg, Amy Lyons, Kristin Manion, Anglea McDowell, Andrea Schroeder, Joann Sognesand, Kari Stapleton, Jenny Tyson, Alisa Zimmerman. SAINTLY SCHEDULE: The Blue Devils may feel blessed (or not) after going through the early part of their schedule when they play five schools named after saints - College of St. Benedict (Sept. 5), St. Catherine (Sept. 8), St. Thomas (Sept. 12), St. Scholastica (Sept. 20) and St. Mary's (Sept. 23). The Blue Devils went 4-0-1 against all of the saints combined

Halverson scored her first five goals over three games in 1999 and went on to score 14 goals on the season...Kelly Conn scored her first collegiate goal in the Blue Devils' season opener against Concordia University....sophomore Jenna Kizlik (Hammond) was named the WIAC offensive player of the week Sept. 5, 2012 after scoring the game-winning goal in the season opener against St. Olaf...This year's captains for the Blue Devils are Alix Hyduke, Emily Ferger (Wauwatosa) and Whitney Solomon (Duluth, Minn.)...Camille Fawcett scored her first career goal against UW-La Crosse.
DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils will close the regular season when they travel to former WIAC foe, UW-Superior, Wednesday, Oct. 28 for a probably chilly 7 p.m. start on the north shore.
