Archived VideoMENOMONIE (October 10, 2015) - It may have been Senior Day, but it was several underclassmen who came up clutch as UW-Stout rallied to take a 3-2 home win over UW-Platteville Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils (11-11, 2-2 WIAC) trailed 2-1 after the first three sets with Platteville (10-13, 0-4 WIAC) grabbing the first set, 25-22, and third set, 25-21. Stout took the second set, 25-21.
Stout took the lead in the fourth set, holding a 17-11, only to see the Pioneers tighten the score at 19-18. Freshman
Kennedy Strain (Elk River, Minn) recorded back-to-back kills to give Stout a 21-18 lead. Platteville pulled to within 21-19 when freshman
Steph Cannon (Mora, Minn) put down a kill to stretch the lead back to three. The teams traded points, and Stout pulled ahead 24-21 on a Platteville attack error. Sophomore
Carly Troudt (Lino Lakes, Minn) recorded the set winning kills to knot the score.
Platteville took the early lead in the fifth set, but Stout tied the score when Strain recorded a kill to tie the score at 5-all. A Platteville ball handling error, block assists by Kennedy and Cannon, and other kill by Kennedy gave Stout an 8-5 lead. The Blue Devils gradually increaed the lead to 12-8.
Payton Schultz gave Stout a 13-8 lead with a service ace. An error by Stout and a Platteville block by Lidia Frias tightened the score to 13-10.
But Troudt pounded back-to-back kills to end the match.
Cannon finished with a collegiate-best 12 kills. Strain tallied 10 kills, one solo block and four assisted blocks.
Rachel Tschumperlin (Sr, Fairmont, Minn) had six kills, one solo block and four block assists. The loss stopped a Blue Devils winless streak at six.
Frias led all scorers with 17 points, to go along with six block assists. Lauren Grady had 13 kills and LeeAnn Mizgalski had 11 kills.
Stout steps out of conference action for the next week, traveling to the College of St. Scholastica, Tuesday, Oct. 13 and then to the UW-Eau Claire Invitational, Friday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17.
