MENOMONIE (January 24, 2015) - UW-Stout lost in the final seconds Saturday against the Pioneers of UW-Platteville. Jake Manning scored an and-one layup with 11 seconds left in regulation to tie the game up at 59, and then sunk the following free throw to give Platteville the 60-59 victory.
Manning led all scorers with 23 points.
Jalen Patterson (Fr, Lauderdale, Minn.) scored a team high 15 for Stout in the loss.
Platteville (13-5, 6-3 WIAC) came out scoring early in the first half, taking a 16-6 lead around the 13 minute mark. Stout (3-15, 0-9 WIAC) soon stormed back with an 11-0 run to take the lead 21-20 on a layup by
Brett Ahsenmacher (So, Annandale, Minn.
). The first half ended with the Blue Devils on top 29-27.
The second half was a tight one, which included nine lead changes and eight ties, neither team had an advantage. Both teams shot around 47 percent in the second half, and the Blue Devils held the Pioneers to only 10 percent from 3-point range in the second half.
With 11 seconds to play, Stout had one final try at the win, but a layup by Ahsenmacher came up short, just off the rim, to make the final score 60-59 Platteville on top.
Matt Oestreich and Jim Stocki finished with 12 and 14 points for the Pioneers. The Pioneers also out rebounded Stout 39-24.
Stout had only two men in double digit scoring, Patterson with 15 and
John Lahti (Fr, Turtle Lake) with 12. In the loss, the Blue Devils managed to force 16 turnovers against the Pioneers.
In their next two consecutive road games, the Blue Devils will travel to UW-Eau Claire to face off against the Blugolds Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m., and then will travel to UW-Oshkosh Saturday, Jan. 31 for a game at 3 p.m. against the Titans.
