MENOMONIE (January 17, 2015) - A tough UW-Superior team stole the show late against UW-Stout Saturday afternoon in Johnson Fieldhouse. The final minutes tested the Blue Devils, but Superior came out on top 72-65. Superior's Zach Schradle finished with a game high in both points and rebounds, posting a 23 and 15 double-double.
Jalen Patterson (Fr, Lauderdale, Minn.) posted a career high 17 points for the Blue Devils.
The first half was an exciting one. Both teams lit up the scoreboard trading baskets. Stout (3-13, 0-7 WIAC) jumped out to an early 20-16 lead mid way through the first half led by Patterson who scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half, but Superior (8-9, 2-6 WIAC) soon fought back and ended the first half ahead by two, 34-32.
In the second half the Yellow Jackets sustained their small lead until an electric couple of plays by the Blue Devils, including a 3-pointer by freshman
John Keefe (Medford) and a monster alley-oop from
D'Marcco Patrick (Fr, Kenosha) to
Jarvis Ragland (Sr, Milwaukee) put the Blue Devils up by three, 58-55. Zach Schradle soon brought the Yellow Jackets back with an and-one, and a made free throw, making the score 62-60.
Good free throw shooting by Superior, 8-10 in the final 3 minutes, helped secure the victory.
Four Yellow Jackets finished in double digit scoring. Schradle had 23, Brian Lindblom added 13, Caleb Burch 11 and Ty Ketz 10. The Yellow Jackets also out rebounded the Blue Devils 32-22.
Three players for the Blue Devils scored in double digits, Patterson again had a career high with 17, Patrick contributed 11, while Ragland added 10. Despite the loss Stout managed to shoot well from the 3-point line, 7-15, 46 percent on the game.
Stout will take a short trip to UW-River Falls this Wednesday Jan. 21, to face off against the Falcons in a 7 p.m. game, and then head back home and play UW-Platteville Saturday Jan. 24, at 3 p.m.
