Whitewater comes from behind to take win over Blue Devils

MENOMONIE (January 10, 2015) - UW-Whitewater surged late in the second half to down the UW-Stout 74-69 Saturday afternoon at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout held the lead from three minutes into the first half all the way through the game until the five minute mark in the second half. The Blue Devils were led by Katelynne Folkers (Sr, Fall Creek) with a career-best 19 points.

Stout (4-10, 2-3 WIAC) had a monstrous first half, and at 5:47 led by 14 with a score of 32-18. Stout scored from all over the court in the first half shooting 50 percent from both two and  3-point range. Stout also played solid defense in the half, holding Whitewater (7-7, 2-3 WIAC) to only 38.2 percent from the floor and 12.5 percent from three. The second half was a different story.

Stout shot the ball much worse, 32.1 percent overall, and  20 percent from three, helping Whitewater inch back and bring the game to within four points at around the 15 minute mark. The game was then tied 56-56 by Lisa Palmer of Whitewater on a free throw with about five minutes left to go. From there, the two teams traded baskets until the Warhawks took the lead on a layup by Andrea Meinert with 40 seconds left, to putting them up 69-67.

The game was then won by Whitewater on free throws, going 5-for-6 from the line in the final seconds.

Jenna Goldsmith (So, St. Anthony, Minn) contributed with 13 points, five rebounds, and three blocks for Stout, while Brea Boomer (Sr, Grand Portage, Minn) had 10 points and led the team in rebounding with seven total.

The Warhawks were led by Andrea Meinert, who had a game high 22 points. Whitewater also edged Stout on the glass, out rebounding the Blue Devils, 42-36.

Next week Stout wil play at UW-Oshkosh. Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m., then will be at UW-Superior, Saturday, Jan. 17 at 3 p.m.
