MENOMONIE (September 7, 2014) - UW-Stout missed on a couple of key opportunities and St. Benedict took advantage of a couple of brief breaks in the action to spoil the Blue Devils' home opener with a 2-0 win Sunday at Nelson Field.

Seventeen minutes into the game, Stout (1-1-0) was denied when Kelly Conn 's (So, Menasha) penalty kick shot was blocked by St. Ben's goalkeeper Heather Kaluzniak, who sent the ball into the crossbar before it bounced back into play.

Then, late in the game, Stout saw two opportunities just miss. Jenna Kizlik (Jr, Hammond) sent a straight-on shot from about 20 yards out just over the cross bar. Minutes later, Conn had another kick denied.

The Blazers (3-1-0) put up their third consecutive shutout, getting on the board in the 38th minute when Peggy Renier's free kick from 30 yards out caught a breeze and rainbowed into the Stout goal. St. Benedict got the clincher in the 73rd minute when Gracie Vaughan took a throw-in from Brooke DeMets and scored.

Overall, Stout outshot St. Benedict, 10-9, and both Kaluzniak and Stout's goalkeeper, Paige Meyer (Jr, Beldenville) made five saves. St. Benedict recorded six corner kicks to none for Stout.

The Blue Devils will be at Bethel University, Tuesday, Sept. 9, then will visit the Milwaukee area to face Concordia University, Saturday, Sept. 13 and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Sunday, Sept. 14.
