Soccer Preview: Stout travels to Oshkosh Saturday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (2-3-2, 1-0-0 WIAC) will be Macalester College (3-2-1, 1-0-1 MIAC), Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. and at UW-Oshkosh (3-3-1, 0-0-0 WIAC), Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT:  The Blue Devils trailed 1-0 early, but goals by Jenna Kizlik and Kelly Conn before the end of the first half were enough for the Blue Devils to take a 2-1 WIAC-opening win over UW-Platteville, Sept 20 in Menomonie, snapping a five game winless streak. A LOOK AT UW-STOUT: Jenna Kizlik leads the Blue Devils in scoring, adding her second goal of the season Saturday. Kizlik also has an assist. Lauren Kizlik has two goals and returned to the Blue Devil lineup against UW-Platteville Saturday after missing four games to injury.  Kelly Conn scored her first points of the season Saturday against Platteville, assisting Jenna Kizlik,the getting her own goal for the eventual game winner. Sarah Todey, who missed several early games, has a goal and an assist. Paige Meyer has worked 645 minutes in the net and has a goals against average (GAA) of 1.25. . Kristi Schurhammer played the other 24 minutes in a pair of games and stopped all four shots she has faced.. The Blue Devils return four of their six top scorers from last year. For the first time in nearly a decade, Stout landed four players on the All-WIAC team – and three of those players return, including midfielder Jenna Kizlik (Jr, Hammond), goalkeeper Paige Meyer (Jr, River Falls) and forward Lauren Kizlik (So, Hammond). The Kizlik sisters were among the team's leaders in scoring. Lauren was second on the team with five goals and one assist for 11 points, ranking in the top 10 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in scoring. Jenna, who missed nine games, finished with a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Meyer alternated in goal early during the season, but when the calendar turned to October she began to grab the majority of starts, including six during conference play. Meyer finished the year at 5-5-1, posting a goals against average of 1.19 and a saves percentage of .851. In WIAC games only, Meyer was 3-2-0, but dropped her GAA to 0.76. A LOOK AT MACALESTER COLLEGE: Bonnie Gale and Rae Hohle lead the Scotts with three goals apiece. Margaret Nemetz has one goal and a team-high four assists. Emma Toomer has started four goals between the pipes and has gotten the majority of the minutes, posting a GAA of 1.50. Rachel Wilson-King has started two game and has a 2.00 GAA. Macalester fell behind by a pair of goals, but came back and to finish with a 2-2 tie with Hamline University Saturday. Lily Jilk converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute and Hohle tied the score 56 seconds into the second half. ,   | 2014 Stats

THE LAST TIME STOUT AND MACALESTER MET: While UW-Stout drew first blood, it was Macalester College that kept scratching away and the Scots came off Nelson Field with a 2-1 win Sept. 11, 2013. Lauren Kizlik  scored her first collegiate goal when she got the Blue Devils  on the board in the 10th minutes, scoring unassisted. But the Scots knotted the score when Maggie Molter scored in the 17th minutes, on an assist from Georgia Cloepfil. The duo would repeat the feat when Molter scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute. The Blue Devils had a chance with less than 30 seconds to go on a corner kick. But even though the kick by Jessica Goodrich went into the box, the Blue Devils came up empty. | Story and Stats

A LOOK AT UW-OSHKOSH: The game with the Titans will be Oshkosh's WIAC opener. The Titans are scheduled to play St. Norbert Sept. 23. Previous to that game, the Titans lost to Concordia-Wisconsin, 1-0, Sept. 17. Rachel Elliott and Amanda Baalke have each scored a goal. Elliott has also added an assist to lead the Titans in points. Nini Muzi has started and played in six games in the net, posting a 0.71 GAA., second in the WIAC. After finishing 6-2-0 in conference play last season, the Titans were picked to finish second again this year, according to a WIAC preseason poll..  |  2014 Stats

THE LAST TIME STOUT AND OSHKOSH MET: The Titans won the regular season game, 1-0, when Chelsea Kierszh scored in the 46th minute. AWARDS:  Paige Meyer, Jenna Kizlik, Lauren Kizlik and now assistant coach Emily Ferger were selected to the All-WIAC team, onlly the second time Stout has placed four players on the squad.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Blue Devil team captains for the 2014 season are Sarah Ulrich, Vanessa Wrobel and Jenna Kizlik.

UW-STOUT COACH RYAN RAUFUS: Coach Ryan Raufus (27-27-7) is in his fourth year as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Raufus played his college ball at Springfield College in Massachusetts and came to Stout after coaching at La Crosse Logan High School and La Crescent, Minn., High School.

QUICK HITS:  The Blue Devils overcame a slow start last season. Hampered by early season injuries, Stout won two of their first 10 games, but won six of their final nine games.

In scoring her first five goals over the first three games of the season, Hyduke matched Alyssa Halverson as the only Blue Devil to accomplish that feat. Halverson scored her first five goals over three games in 1999 and went on to score 14 goals on the season...Kelly Conn scored her first collegiate goal in the Blue Devils' season opener against Concordia University....sophomore Jenna Kizlik (Hammond) was named the WIAC offensive player of the week Sept. 5, 2012 after scoring the game-winning goal in the season opener against St. Olaf...This year's captains for the Blue Devils are Alix Hyduke,  Emily Ferger (Wauwatosa) and Whitney Solomon (Duluth, Minn.)...Camille Fawcett scored her first career goal against UW-La Crosse.


DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils will host UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. and UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.
