Photo GalleryMENOMONIEÂ (September 20, 2014) - The refrains of "Happy Birthday" arose from Nelson Field after UW-Stout defeated UW-Platteville, 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener for both teams at Nelson Field Saturday.
The Blue Devils (2-3-2, 1-0-0 WIAC) snapped a five game winless streak this season and a two-game losing streak to UW-Platteville, hinding coach
Ryan Raufus a birthday present.
The game did not start well for Stout. The Pioneers (4-3-0, 0-1-0 WIAC) attacked early and found an open seam when Yamliex Jaramillo scored only 1-minute, 15-seconds into the contest.
The Pioneers pushed the Blue Devils for the next 10 minutes before control started to go Stout's way.
Stout evened the score when
Jenna Kizlik (Jr, Hammond) headed a corner kick from
Kelly Conn (So, Menasha) in the 17th minute. Stout tallied 10 corner kicks to one for Platteville.
Fifteen minutes later, it was Conn's turn to get on the scoreboard. Taking a pass from
Sarah Todey (So, Maple Grove, Minn), Conn spun around, kicking the bal into the net to give Stout a 2-1 lead in the 34th minute.
Paige Meyer (Jr, Beldenville) finished the day with three saves, stopping two in the first period and one in the second. Platteville's Mandy Taylor took the loss, making two saves, but surrendering both goals in the first half. Katie Rash came on to stop two shots in the second half.
Stout will be at Macalester College, Tuesday, Sept. 23 and at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Sept. 27.
