Soccer Preview: Stout to host College of St.Benedict Sunday at 1 p.m.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devil (1-0, 0-0 WIAC) soccer team has to wait a little while longer for their season opener and longer still for their home opener. The Blue Devils' home contest with St. Catherine's scheduled for Aug. 29, was washed out due to inclement weather. A make-up date is yet to be determined. Stout is scheduled to get the season going at St. Mary's University (1-0-0, 0-0-0 MIAC) Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in Winona, Minn. Stout is scheduled to host the College of St. Benedict (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MIAC), Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT:  The Blue Devils' 2013 season ended when the team lost in a shootout at UW-Oshkosh in the second round of the WIAC Championship. Earlier in that same week, the Blue Devils defeated UW-La Crosse in a WIAC quarterfinal game, making last year the first time Stout advanced to the semi-finals since the 2005 season. | Story and Stats

A LOOK AT UW-STOUT:  The Blue Devils return four of their six top scorers from last year. For the first time in nearly a decade, Stout landed four players on the All-WIAC team – and three of those players return, including midfielder Jenna Kizlik (Jr, Hammond), goalkeeper Paige Meyer (Jr, River Falls) and forward Lauren Kizlik (So, Hammond). The Kizlik sisters were among the team's leaders in scoring. Lauren was second on the team with five goals and one assist for 11 points, ranking in the top 10 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in scoring. Jenna, who missed nine games, finished with a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Meyer alternated in goal early during the season, but when the calendar turned to October she began to grab the majority of starts, including six during conference play. Meyer finished the year at 5-5-1, posting a goals against average of 1.19 and a saves percentage of .851. In WIAC games only, Meyer was 3-2-0, but dropped her GAA to 0.76. A LOOK AT ST. MARY'S UNIVERSITY: The Cardinals are coming off a 2-1 double overtime win over UW-River Falls Sunday in Winona, a game that was postponed from Friday. Freshman Emily Loof scored the game's first goal,then hit the game winner in the second OT. The Cardinals are coming off a season that saw them go 0-18-0 overall. | 2014 Stats | 2013 Stats

THE LAST TIME STOUT AND ST. MARY'S MET: The teams have not met since the 2008 season when UW-Stout took a 5-1 win on Oct. 23, 2008, in Menomonie. | Story and Stats

A LOOK AT THE COLLEGE OF ST. BENEDICT: The Blazers were ranked 14th in the first D3Bennett rankings, but a split during a weekend trip to Washington state dropped them from the poll. St. Ben's fell 1-0 to Whitman College, Aug. 29, then picked up their first win of the season with a 1-0 win over Whitworth University the following day. Alyssa Hoffman scored the game winner in the 49th minute and goalkeeper Megan Favorite saved Whitworth's only legitimate shot on goal for the day. | 2014 Stats | 2013 Stats

THE LAST TIME STOUT AND ST. BENEDICT MET: St. Benedict scored early in the game, in the middle and at the end of the game to take a 3-0 win, Sept. 15, 2013, in St. Josepth, Minn. | Story and Stats

AWARDS:  Paige Meyer, Jenna Kizlik, Lauren Kizlik and now assistant coach Emily Ferger were selected to the All-WIAC team, onlly the second time Stout has placed four players on the squad.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Blue Devil team captains for the 2014 season are Sarah Ulrich, Vanessa Wrobel and Jenna Kizlik.

UW-STOUT COACH RYAN RAUFUS: Coach Ryan Raufus (25-24-5) is in his fourth year as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Raufus played his college ball at Springfield College in Massachusetts and came to Stout after coaching at La Crosse Logan High School and La Crescent, Minn., High School.

QUICK HITS:  The Blue Devils overcame a slow start last season. Hampered by early season injuries, Stout won two of their first 10 games, but won six of their final nine games.

Raufus played his college ball at Springfield College in Massachusetts and came to Stout after coaching at La Crosse Logan High School and La Crescent, Minn., High School.QUICK HITS:  Senior Alix Hyduke (Duluth, Minn.) currently leads the 2013 team with six goals scored. In scoring her first five goals over the first three games of the season, Hyduke matched Alyssa Halverson as the only Blue Devil to accomplish that feat. Halverson scored her first five goals over three games in 1999 and went on to score 14 goals on the season...Kelly Conn scored her first collegiate goal in the Blue Devils' season opener against Concordia University....sophomore Jenna Kizlik (Hammond) was named the WIAC offensive player of the week Sept. 5, 2012 after scoring the game-winning goal in the season opener against St. Olaf...This year's captains for the Blue Devils are Alix Hyduke,  Emily Ferger (Wauwatosa) and Whitney Solomon (Duluth, Minn.)...Camille Fawcett scored her first career goal against UW-La Crosse.


DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils will be at Bethel University, Tuesday, Sept. 9, then travel to Milwaukee to take on Concordia University, Saturday, Sept. 13 and the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), Sunday, Sept. 14.
