WHEN THEY MET LAST: Platteville swept the season series against the Blue Devils, winning the first match-up 61-42 at Johnson Fieldhouse on Jan. 11 and the second game 55-48 on Feb. 15 at Bo Ryan Court in Platteville.
Game One: Stout fell behind early and trailed almost the whole game, as UW-Platteville ran away with a 61-42 victory at Johnson Fieldhouse on Jan. 11. At the break, the Blue Devils were shooting just 26 percent (6-23) from the field. The second half was better, as Stout hit 36 percent (9-25) of their shots, but the hot shooting of Platteville kept the game just out of reach. Alex Oman made the score 27-34. Oman would finish with 14 points, tied for game-high scoring honors, including going 7-7 from the free throw line. Platteville put the game out of reach after that though, going on a 17-6 run over the next six minutes to push their lead to 18, 51-33 with 9:08 to go. Stout would never get closer than 14 points the rest of the way. The Pioneers had four players score in double figures, led by Chas Cross with 14. Game Two: UW-Stout almost recovered from a nearly eight minute dry spell in the second half, but couldn't quite bounce back in a 55-48 loss at UW-Platteville. The Blue Devils did not hit a field goal after
Jimmy Whitehead drilled a jumper with 16:59 in the second half until
Aaron Jenny's layup at 8:45 of the stanza. The Pioneers went on an 8-2 run during the stretch to take a 40-32 lead where Stout hit two free throws. Jenny pulled Stout to within three, 42-39, on a 3-pointer with 5:53 left and the Blue Devils would get as close as two points, 45-43, on a pair Whitehead free throws with 3:07 left, and again, about 30 seconds later on a Whitehead jumper. A jumper by the Pioneers' Boston Johnson with 1:06 left stretched the lead to 50-46. The Pioneers made five free throws down the stretch to hold off Stout. The Blue Devil defense held the Pioneers to their lowest point totals of the season and well under their average of 72.8 points per contest.
