Blue Devil rally comes up short against Pointers

STEVENS POINT (December 6, 2014) – In what looked like a blowout in the making midway through the second period, turned into a game after UW-Stout scored three consecutive second period power play goals to pull to within one goal, but inevitably fifth ranked UW-Stevens Point prevailed, 7-5, Saturday.
 
The Pointers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period, but Stout (2-7-1, 0-2-0 WIAC) opened the second to cut the lead in half when Craig Lindegard (So, Hallock, Minn) scored 40 seconds into the stanza.
 
The Pointers (8-2-0, 2-0-0 WIAC) answered back with three goals, two coming on power plays at 2:04 and 3:14 and an even strength goal at 8:53 to take a 5-1 lead.
 
Then it was the Blue Devils' turn. Joey Haydock (So, Junction City) scored back-to-back power play goals within 30 seconds of each other, the first coming at 13:08 of the second period and the third come at 13:38. The goals were Haydock's first goals of the season.
 
Lindegard made it 5-4 less than two minutes later, scoring on the power play at 15:18 of the second.
 
The Pointers' jumped ahead 6-4 at 1:23 in the third. Stout got that goal back when Shayne McLaughlin (So, Eau Claire) scored at 6:32. The Pointers got the final goal of the night at 15:49 of the final period.

Danny Ray (Jr, Grand Forks, ND) and Tyler Cayemberg (So, East Troy) each recorded two assists for Stout. Joe Kalisz had two goals for the Pointers, the first goal of the night and the final goal.

Spencer Viele (So, Wildwood, Mo) stopped 36 shots for Stout, while Brandon Jaeger made 26 stops for the Pointers. The teams mixed it up a bit. Stout had six penalties for 26 minutes, while the Pointers were whistled seven times for 17 minutes. Stout was 3-for-5 on the power play, the Pointers 2-for-5.

Stout is off until Friday, Jan. 9 when they host the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Stout will play 10 of their final 14 games at home.
