Men's Basketball Preview: Stout to travel to La Crosse to take on Viterbo

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (0-2, 0-0 WIAC) will travel to La Crosse to take on Viterbo University, (2-3, 0-0 MCC) Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. The V-Hawks lost 64-57 at UW-Eau Claire, Tuesday, Nov. 18.

THE BLUE DEVILS : To say the Blue Devils are a young team is an understatement. With 13 freshmen on the squad and 14 players new to the program, this is long-time coach Eddie Andrist's youngest collegiate team ever. The Blue Devils return five players who have worn a Blue Devil uniform before this year - senior Jarvis Ragland, juniors Hank Kujak and Reggie Kujak and sophomores Brett Ahsenmacher and Alex Hammond. Andrist plans to use a faster paced offense this year, and rotate lot of players throughout the game. After two games, Ragland and Ahsenmacher have been the team's leading scorer. Ragland is avearging 17.5 points and pulling down 7.0 rebounds. Ahsenmacher is averaging 16.5 points. Freshman D'Marcco Patrick is aveaging 9.5 points and John Keefe 8.5 points. STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils lost both games at the Gabe Miller Tip-Off Classic at UW-Platteville last weekend, falling to Ripon College, 94-79, Nov. 15, and 84-70 to Coe College, Nov. 16. Brett Ahsenmacher led Stout with a career-best 18 points against Ripon, while Jarvis Ragland tossed in 14 points and had nine rebounds. Freshman John Keefe added 11 points. Against Coe College, Stout knocked down 28-of-39 free throws, and Ragland netted 9-of-10 freebies on his way to matching a career-high 21 points. SCOUTING VITERBO: The V-Hawks are 2-2 and have an exhibition game with Division I Iowa State University (L 115-48) in their schedule. Before Tuesday's game at UW-Eau Claire, the V-Hawks are led by David Shepard with 19.0 points and 7.8 rebounds, Alex Diacuala with 14.0 points and 6.3 rebounds and TJ Hemauer with 12.5 points. VITERBO LAST TIME OUT: Viterbo held a seven point 30-23 halftime lead, but couldn't hang on as the V-Hawks fell at UW-Eau Claire Tuesday, 64-57. The V-Hawks' David Shepard led all scorers with 21 points and posted the double-double with 10 rebounds, while Alex Diciaula added 13 points and Pete Drummond contributed 10.

WHEN STOUT AND VITERBO LAST MET: Viterbo and Stout have not squared off since Dec. 18, 2010 when the Blue Devils took a 96-77 win at Johnson Fieldhouse. Mahlon Thomas had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Stout. | Game Story and Statistics

AWARDS AND HONORS: Alex Oman was selected as the UW-Stout Northwestern Mutual athlete of the week, Jan. 28...Alex Oman was selected as the WIAC player of the week, Dec. 10...Jimmy Whitehead was the WIAC and the UW-Stout Northwestern Mutual player of the week, Dec. 3.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Blue Devil team captains for the 2014-15 season are.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Eddie Andrist (183-179 at Stout, 433-370 overall) is in his 15th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 26th overall in the collegiate ranks. Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance five seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round. Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships. Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar. | Viterbo: Wayne Wagner is in his 16th year at the helm of the V-Hawks.

CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the nine team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. Superior will leave the conference after the 2014-15 season.

UP NEXT: UW-Stout will host the annual UW-Stout Thanksgiving Turkey Shootout, Saturday, Nov. 29 and Sunday, Nov. 30. The tournament will be played in a championship format for the first time in many years. Stout will play Wartburg College at 7 p.m., Nov. 29. Cardinal Stritch will play Ashford at 3 p.m. The consolation game will be Nov. 30 at 1 p.m., with the championship game at 5 p.m.
