UW-La Crosse 21, UW-Stout 7LA CROSSE (October 18, 2014) - UW-La Crosse's Ben Hertrampf scored two fourth quarter touchdowns and the Eagles went on to a 21-7 win over UW-Stout Saturday at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles (2-4, 1-2 WIAC) scored on a 12-play, 74-yard drive when Scott Shewmon grabbed a 19-yard pass from quarterback Trent Cummings with 35 seconds left on the clock in the second quarter.
The Blue Devils (1-5, 0-3 WIAC) took advantage of an Eagles' miscue in the third quarter when
Kyle Hoefft (Jr, Morton, Ill) sacked Cummings forcing a fumble, recovered by
Tyler Naatz (Sr, Menomonie) at the La Crosse 13.

Cody Rosemeyer (Sr, Gilman) gained seven yards on a second down run to the La Crosse 6-yardline. After an incomplete third down pass, quarterback
Garrett Peterson (So, Menasha) carried five yards for a Stout first down at the one-yard line. Peterson attempted to run again, but was stopped for no gain, but
Adolfo Pacheco (So, South Elgin, Ill) carried in for the score on the next play and the score was knotted at 7-7 at 4:14 in the third quarter.
La Crosse answered back on their next drive. After returning the ensuing kickoff to the La Crosse 35, the Eagles used nine plays, with Cummings completing four passes for 41 yards and Hertrampf rushing 20 yards on four carries, to set up Hertrampf's first score of the game, a 1-yard plunge on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Stout's first drive of the fourth quarter stalled at the La Crosse 45 and Peterson pinned the Eagles on their own two-yard line with a 43 yard punt.
The Eagles slowly moved out of the shadow of their goal post. Cummings completed a 13-yard pass to Tony Bilderback on third down to the La Crosse 26. On the next third down, Cummings completed an 18-yard pass to Stackhouse to the La Crosse 47. Hertrampf, who finished the game iwth 137 yards on 18 carries, rumbled off a 53-yard TD score on the next play and the Eagles led, 21-7 at 5:34.
Peterson moved the Blue Devils down the field, completing eight passes to the La Crosse 28 before being intercepted by Jacob Flegner at the La Crosse 7 with just under three minutes left.
The Eagles got a first down on the drive, and ran the clock out.
La Crosse outgained Stout, 295 total yards to 262. The Eagles ran the ball 36 times for 147 yards, while Stout ran the ball 35 times for 107 yards. Cummings completed 14-of-23 passes for 148 yards with one interception. Peterson aired the ball out, completing 26-of-37 passes for 155 yards, but was picked off three times.
Matt Small (Sr, Atwater, Calif) caught six passes for 45 yards,
Aaron Jenny (Sr, Spicer, Minn) six passes for 37 yards,
Tanner Kuehn (Sr, Fairchild) six passes for 32 yards and
Chris Pica-Anderson (So, Eleva) five passes for 18 yards. Rosemeyer caught two passes and
Reggie Kujak (Jr, Blair) one. Kuehn rushed eight times for 32 yards. Rosemeyer carred five times for 31 yards. Peterson had 10 carries for 25 yards and was sacked twice. Pacheco had a rough day, carrying 11 times for 12 yards and Stout's only score.
For the Eagles, K. Akindolier caught four passes for 28 yards, Shewman hauled in three catches - including a TD pass - for 46 yards and Tony Bilderback had three grabs for 36 yards. Hertrampf had 137 of the Eagles 147 rushing yards. Cummings finished with minus-13 rushing yards, and was sacked twice, once by Hoefft and by
Collin Laursen (Jr, Mondovi).
Defensively for Stout,
Luke Bakkum (Sr, Oconomowoc) had nine tackles and
LaRon Thompson (Jr, Modesto, Calif) had seven tackles.
James Van Thiel (so, Hilbert) had his first career interception, a 26-yard pick early in the third quarter. S. Rockweiler had 18 tackles for the Eagles, while Mitch Hawkins had 13, including two tackles for loss.
The Blue Devils will host UW-Platteville, Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. at Don & Nona Williams Stadium in the annual Hall of Fame Game and Military Appreciation Day.
