THIS WEEK'S GAME: After nearly a month off from competition, the Blue Devils (3-7-0, 1-1-0 WIAC) head east to the
Pathfinder Bank/Oswego Classic hosted by SUNY-Oswego in Oswego, N.Y., Jan. 3-4. The Blue Devils will play
Utica College (8-2-1), Friday, Jan. 3, then will play either host
Oswego State (5-2-1) or
Curry State, (2-5-1) Saturday, Jan. 4. This tournament is loaded. Both host Oswego and Utica made it to the NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Frozen Four last season, Utica bowing out in the semi-final game and Oswego in the championship game.
THE 2013-14 BLUE DEVILS (3-7-0, 1-1-0 WIAC): Kevin O'Donnell leads Stout with seven goals and five assists O'Donnell has worked his way onto the UW-Stout all-time career scoring list. His 76 total points (35-45-80) ranks him 20th.
Craig Lindegard and
Danny Ray each have three goals. Ray has four assists and Lindegard has two assists.Â

Jordan Tredinnick and
Zach Vierling each have two goals and three assists.Â
Justin Moody has two goals and two assists.
Tyler Cayemberg has a goal and four assists. Nineteen different players have scored at least one point and 13 players have scored at least one goal.
Corey Koop, the reigning WIAC player of the week, has spent the most time in the net, posting a 2.89 goals atainst average and a saves percentage of .920. His 59 saves against UW-Stevens Point was the most by a Stout goal in more than 10 years in a single game. Â |Â

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Blue Devils have scored eight power play goals, second only to UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC, going 8-of-35 (22.9 percent).

SCOUTING UTICA COLLEGE PIONEERS (8-2-1): The Pioneers defeated Salve Regina, 5-1, Dec. 7 in Utica, NY. The Pioneers opened the scoring in the first perioad, allowed Salve Regina to tie the score in the second period before running off four unanswered goals through the rest of the game, with two goals coming in the final minutes of the contest. Adam Graff leads the Pioneers with six goals and six assists. Trever Hertz has three goals and a team-high eight assists. Louie Educate and Nick Miglio each have four goals. Nick Theirren has spent the majority of the time in the net, posting a GAA of 2.11. Marcus Zelzer has recorded three wins in three games playing, showing off a GAA of 1.63. The Pioneers are outscoring their opponents, 40-22. The Pioneers last year lost to UW-Eau Claire in the semi-finals of the NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Championship. |Â

SCOUTING OSWEGO STATE LAKERS (5-2-1): The 12th ranked Lakers are coming off their first tie of the season, but it was a 3-3 decision to top ranked Plattsburgh State, Dec. 7. Mike Wells scored the tying goal seven minutes into the third period. The Lakers lost national player of the year Paul Rodrigues to graduation and also lost to UW-Eau Claire in the championship game of the NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Championship. Mike Galati leads the Lakers with seven goals and three assists, while Shawn Hulsof has five goals and three assists. Mike Montagna, Kenny Neil and Bobby Gergsakis each have six assists. Mike Zawadski and Justin Gilbert have been splitting time between the pipes. Zawadski is 3-0-1 with a GAA of 1.59. Gilbert is 2-2-0 with a GAA of 3.21. SCOUTING CURRY COLLEGE COLONELS (2-5-1): Curry State is coming off a 2-2 tie with Mass-Dartmouth. Similar to the Blue Devils, the Colonels have 13 freshmen on the squad. Brandon Gilmore, Matt Devereaux and Joe Scarfo have each scored two goals, with Gilmore adding three assists. Derek Mohney has gotten the most time in net, posting a 1-3-1 record with a GAA of 1.99. Brett Sinclair has a 1-2-0 record with a GAA of 3.75. |Â

THE COACHES: UW-Stout:Â
Terry Watkins (210-240-28) is in his 18th season as the head coach of the Blue Devils' varsity program. Watkins spent eight years coaching the club team (104-102-16) as Stout prepared to return to varsity status in 1997. Watkins was the 2006-07 NCHA coach of the year when Stout finished in a three-way tie for first. Watkins had a Hall of Fame career at Stout as a defenseman. Stout won a WIAC title in 2010-11, and an NCHA title during the 2006-07 season. Watkins reached 700 games as the head coach of a UW-Stout hockey team (varsity and club) when they Blue Devils played UW-Stevens Point, Dec. 7.
Utica College:.
Gary Heenan was hired as head coach of the Utica College men's ice hockey program in August 2000. Since that time, Heenan has led the team to 10 consecutive ECAC Men's West Conference playoff appearances (2003-2013), three appearances in the ECAC West championship game, two ECAC West regular-season championships and its most recent trip to the NCAA Frozen Four..Â
Oswego State: Â
Ed Gosek, a former Laker hockey player and a 1983 graduate, has been the head coach of the Oswego State Lakers since 2003, sporting a career record of 212-56-16 in 10 seasons. During the 2012-13 campaign, Gosek directed Oswego State to an overall record of 25-5-0 and its fourth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championships and second straight NCAA Runner-Up finish. A two-time SUNYAC Coach of the Year, Gosek has led Oswego State to the top of the SUNYAC standings in eight of the last 10 regular seasons. Gosek reached the 200-win plateau in his 270th game behind the bench as a head coach during the regular season..
Curry College: TJ Manastersky will lead the Curry Men's Ice Hockey team for his second season. His Colonels finished their 2012-13 season with an overall record of 11-11-4 and 7-4-3 in the ECAC Northeast.
THE CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the five team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls.
2012-13 BLUE DEVILS (10-13-2, 5-13-0 NCHA): After a hot start to the season, Stout finished the 2012-13 season with a 10-15-2 overall record, 5-13-0 in their last season in the NCHA and 2-10-0 in the WIAC.  |

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but dropped out. Stout returned to the poll after a win over top-ranked St. Norbert, Jan. 18, garnering eight votes in the Jan. 21 poll, effectively ranking the Blue Devils 19th. |
