THE BLUE DEVILS (9-6, 4-3 WIAC): After starting the season 7-1, the Blue Devils have fallen into a bit of a slump, dropping five of their last seven games, including three conference match-ups. After a heartbreaking one point loss to #1 ranked Stevens Point, the Blue Devils offense couldn't get any baskets to fall in a 61-42 loss at the hands of Platteville. Stout got some last second heroics from their entire lineup when
Adam Wadzinski dropped in a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining to give Stout a 59-57 win UW-La Crosse Wednesday. All five Blue Devil players on the court touched the ball before Wadzinski hit the shot from the corner.
Alex Oman has been the high scorer the last three games for the Blue Devils, dropping 20 against Stevens Point, 14 against Platteville and 17 against La Crosse. Oman is six points short of reaching 1000 career points.. For the season, Oman has been the team's top scorer or tied for top scoring honors in six games. He is averaging 13.5 ppg and has 24 assists on the year, second on the team in both categories, to go along with a team-leading 16steals.
Jimmy Whitehead, who has been Stout's go-to scorer much of the season but has seen limited action due to an injury, leads Stout with a 17.8 points per game average. He has shot .591 (81-137) from the field on the year and is also second on the team in rebounding, with 4.8 rpg. Guard
Aaron Jenny is also doing battle with an injury, and sat out the La Crosse game.. Jenny is averaging 10.8 points points per contest and leads Stout in rebounding (5.7) and assists (2.4).
Adam Wadzinski has started 11 straight games after coming off the bench for the first four contests. He is second on the team with 15 steals. Freshman
Brett Ahsenmacher has started to find his range as he leads the Blue Devils in three-point attempts and makes, hitting 19-43 (.442) from downtown this year. Against the Pointers, Ahsenmacher scored all of his points from beyond the arc, hitting 4-of-6 treys.
Josh Kosloske is averaging 3.7 ppg and grabbing 4.5 rpg.
Debonair Townsend leads the team with 14blocks, good for fourth in the conference.
Tim Butina , and
Jay Higgins have both seen significant time in the post for the Blue Devils, as both are averaging over 10 minutes per game off the bench. Butina is fifth on the team in rebounding, pulling in 3.1 per game to go along with 2.9 ppg. Guard
Hank Kujak has worked his way into the starting lineup, as he has started five straight games going into this week's match-ups. Kujak leads the team in assist-to-turnover ratio, with 18 assists compared to only 10 turnovers.
The Blue Devils have nine players who have started at least two games this season, and eight who have started at least five. As a team, Stout is outscoring their opponents 64.3-62.9. The 62.9 points per game that Stout allows is good for third best in the conference, behind Whitewater and La Crosse, who give up only 61.5 ppg. The Blue Devils also hold their opponents to a WIAC low .413 shooting percentage. In rebounding, Stout is second in the conference in rebounds per game with 37.3 while allowing opponents to grab only 27.7, lowest in the conference. Despite their high rebounding totals, the Blue Devils have had only one player grab double digit rebounds in a game, when Jenny had 10 in the season-opening loss to Mount Mercy. Stout also is third in blocked shots (2.79 per game) and second in offensive rebounding (12.36 per game).
CLIMBING THE LADDER: Blue Devil forward
Alex Oman came into the season with 816 career points and now has the 1000-point mark on the horizon. Oman has scored 178 points this season, raising his career total to 994 points. Oman is currently 24th on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list, ahead of Ron Hunters' (1983-87) 971 points and behind Ken Obermueller's (1971-75) 1019 points. Oman scored 169 points as a freshman, 258 as a sophomore and 389 as a junior.
STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: Stout won a back and forth contest 59-57 over La Crosse thanks in large part to a game winning three point field goal from
Adam Wadzinski with 1.5 second remaining. Trailing 57-56, the Blue Devils passed the ball around the horn with all five players on the court touching the ball before Wadzinski drained the bucket from the corner. The matchup saw multiple lead changes and ties in the first half. Stout pulled out to an early lead in the first half when
Brett Ahsenmacher opened the scoring with a three pointer. The lead would last about five minutes when Braden Tice hit a three pointer for the Eagles to take a one point lead. La Crosse would hold the lead for about 10 minutes until
Jay Higgins converted an and one opportunity to put the Blue Devils back in front. The Stout lead would last only 26 seconds before La Crosse would take the lead back for the rest of the first half. The Eagles lead 34-30 after one period. La Crosse shot a robust 54.5 percent in the first half from the field, including 41.7 percent from three point range. Stout came in at 42.9 percent in the first half including just 22.2 percent from three point range.
SCOUTING UW-OSHKOSH (5-9, 1-5 WIAC): The Titans are led by guard
Jade Royston, who leads the team in scoring at 11.9 ppg. One of two Oshkosh players attempting more than three 3-pointers per game, Royston has hit 34.1 percent of his tries from downtown (16-47).
Dylan Wurtz, the Titans other three point bomber, is second on the team with 10.0 ppg while shooting 42.0 percent beyond the arc (29-69). Multi-talented guard
Alex Olson does a little of everything for Oshkosh, as he leads the team and is second in the WIAC in steals at 1.92 per game, second on the team in rebounding with 4.3 per contest, while scoring 9.5 ppg. Taking charge on the boards is freshman
Max Schebel, who pulls down 5.2 boards per game while chipping in 6.4 points. As a team, the Titans are being outscored 68.3-60.9 and outrebounded 34.0-32.1.
OSHKOSH'S LAST TIME OUT: Tyler Tillema scored 20-plus points for the 10th time this season as top-ranked UW-Stevens Point remained unbeaten with a 58-30 victory over the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team on Wednesday (Jan. 15) in Stevens Point.
WHEN THEY MET LAST YEAR: The Blue Devils came away with a pair of victories last season against Oshkosh, winning the first match-up handily, 76-50, the pulling off a 49-47 win in the regular season finale. In game one, Stout turned a one point lead midway through the first half into a 40-26 halftime lead. The Blue Devils wouldn't look back, pushing the lead to 61-28 before coasting to the finish line.
Alex Oman and
Chris Hortman shared game-high scoring honors with 18 points apiece. The duo combined to shoot 14-22 from the field and 8-14 from downtown.
Erik Olson had 7 assists for Stout. In the second meeting, a sluggish Blue Devil squad held off a resilient Titans team. Although Stout held the lead throughout the game, Oshkosh kept it tight, tying the score three times late in the contest. Cory Nickel of the Titans scored a game-high 24 points, while Hortman led Stout with 13. Oman, Olson and
Jarvis Ragland each scored 9 for the Blue Devils, while Hortman and
Aaron Jenny led the team with 8 rebounds apiece.
