Hockey Preview: Stout road warriors, at St. John's, Concordia this weekend

THIS WEEK'S GAME: The Blue Devils (4-8-0, 1-1-0 WIAC) will be at will be at St. John's University (6-6-0)  Friday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. and at Concordia-Moorhead (8-3-1), Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m.

THE 2013-14 BLUE DEVILS (4-8-0, 1-1-0 WIAC): Kevin O'Donnell leads Stout with seven goals and six assists O'Donnell has worked his way onto the UW-Stout all-time career scoring list. His 77 total points (35-46-81) ranks him 17th. Danny Ray, Matt Millis, Jordan Tredinnick and Craig Lindegard each have three goals. Ray's six assists matches O'Donnell's for the team lead. Millis and Tredinnick each have three assists, while Lindegard has two assists. Zach Vierling and Tyler Cayemberg each have four assists.  Twenty different Blue devils have scored at least one point, while 15 have scored at least one goal. Corey Koop has spent the most time in the net, posting a 2.91 goals against average and a saves percentage of .917. His 59 saves against nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point in December was the most by a Stout goalie in more than 10 years in a single game.   |  2013-14 Statistics

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Blue Devils have scored 11 power play goals, second only to UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC, going 11-of-42 (26.2 percent). Kevin O'Donnell, Matt Millis and Logan each have two power play goals. Craig Lindegard, Danny Ray, Justin Moody, Hunter Scott and Jake Useldinger each have a power play goal.  Stout is in the middle of the pack in penalty kill, allowing six goals in 61 opportunities (9.8  percent). Stout also has two shorthanded goals with Moody and Nolan Kirley scoring the shorties.

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: Stout split a pair of games at the Pathfinder Bank/Oswego Classic at Oswego State, losing 4-2 to Utica College, Jan. 3, and defeating Curry College, 3-2, Jan. 4. Logan Maly was named to the all-tournament team.  The Blue Devils held an early lead over ninth ranked Utica, but couldn't hold on. SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY JOHNNIES (6-6-0, 3-0-0 MIAC): The Johnnies have been idle since a 3-2 win over St. Scholastica, Dec. 13. Josh Gross leads the Johnnies in scoring with five goals and six assists. Tyson Fulton has four goals with one assist.  Saxton Soley has started nine games with a 5-40 record and a 2.13 GAA.  |  2013-14 Statistics

THE SERIES: The teams will meet again this season, Jan. 25, in Menomonie.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Stout scored the first two goals of the game, but St. John's University scored the final two goals, including the tying goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, and the teams skated to a 2-2 tie, Nov. 2, 2012, in St. Cloud, Minn. SCOUTING CONCORDIA-MOORHEAD COBBERS (8-3-1, 3-2-1 MIAC: The Cobbers are receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com Division III men's hockey poll. The Cobbers are scheduled to host UW-River Falls (Jan. 7) and Marian University (Jan. 10), before entertaining the Blue Devils in the afternoon matinee. Caleb Suderman leads the Cobbers with nine goals and six assists. Jordie Bancroft has scored five goals and seven assists. Andrew Detters  Jordan Christianson and Jeremy Johnson have each scored four goals. Deters and Dan Hrabowych each have eight assists. Chris Neamonitis has protected the netting in all but one game, posting a 7-3-1 overall record with a 1.90 GAA and a saves percentage of 94.2. LAST TIME THEY MET: UW-Stout built up a 4-1 lead after two periods and had to hold off a charging Concordia-Moorhead team to pick up their first win of the season, a 4-3 decision. USCHO.com POLL: Utica College and Oswego State are ranked 11th and 12th..  Other Blue Devil opponents in the poll: Eau Claire (10th); St. Norbert (3rd); St. Thomas (6th); Utica (11th) Oswego (12th); St. Scholastica (9th); UW-River Falls(15th).  Concordia-Moorhead and Augsburg arereceiving votes.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Logan Maley was the WIAC player of the week after being named to the Oswego Classic all-tournament team...Corey Koop was the WIAC and the UW-Stout Northwestern Mutual player of the week, Dec. 10, after making 59 saves against nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point...Kevin O'Donnell was a first team all-WIAC selection last season; Jordan Tredinnick and Zach Vierling honorable mention all-WIAC.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Logan Maly is the team captain, while Kevin O'Donnell and Zach Vierling are assistant captains for the 2013-14 season.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout:  Terry Watkins (210-240-28) is in his 18th season as the head coach of the Blue Devils' varsity program. Watkins spent eight years coaching the club team (104-102-16) as Stout prepared to return to varsity status in 1997. Watkins was the 2006-07 NCHA coach of the year when Stout finished in a three-way tie for first. Watkins had a Hall of Fame career at Stout as a defenseman. Stout won a WIAC title in 2010-11, and an NCHA title during the 2006-07 season. Watkins reached 700 games as the head coach of a UW-Stout hockey team (varsity and club) when they Blue Devils played UW-Stevens Point, Dec. 7. St. John's University:. Doug Schueller (SHOE-ler) is in his sixth season as SJU's head hockey coach in 2013-14. Schueller became the 22nd head coach in the 76-year history of Saint John's University hockey May 16, 2008. The Johnnies earned their first MIAC regular-season title since 2005 (eighth overall) and later earned their sixth appearance at the NCAA Division III Tournament with the first MIAC Playoff Championship since 2003 (fifth overall) in 2012-13. Concordia-Moorhead: Chris Howe is in his sixth year and is only the third Concordia men's hockey coach in the past 40 years. Howe steadily improved the Cobbers over his first two seasons and then guided the team to a breakout campaign in 2010-11. Howe helped Concordia earn their first MIAC playoff berth since 2002-03 and then proceeded to lead the team to their first-ever conference tournament championship game. Howe has helped Concordia go from a one-win season the year before he took over to a 12-win campaign in 2010-11.

THE CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the five team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls. St. John's and Concordia are both members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

2012-13 BLUE DEVILS (10-13-2, 5-13-0 NCHA): After a hot start to the season, Stout finished the 2012-13 season with a 10-15-2 overall record, 5-13-0 in their last season in the NCHA and 2-10-0 in the WIAC.   | 2012-13 Statistics

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second  in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but  dropped out. Stout returned to the poll after a win over top-ranked St. Norbert, Jan. 18, garnering eight votes in the Jan. 21 poll, effectively ranking the Blue Devils 19th. | USCHO.com Division III poll
