Gustavus scores two late goals to give Stout first loss of the season

ST. PETER, Minn. (September 2, 2013) - Gustavus Adolphus scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of play to break a tied score and go on to defeat UW-Stout 4-2 in a non-conference contest.

The Blue Devils (1-1-0) fell behind by two goals, but came back to tie the score with two consecutive goals. The Gusties (1-1-0) got on the board in the 37th minutes when Maddie Ackiss scored unassisted, then took a 2-0 lead early in the second half when Amanda Cartony headed in a corner kick in the 47th minute.

Stout got on the board when Alix Hyduke (Sr, Duluth, Minn) scored her third goal of the season, this time on a penalty kick in the 57th minute.

Blue Devil freshman Kelly Conn (Menasha) tied the score when a shot by Jessica Goodrich (Sr, Munster, Ind) was blocked by the Gustie goalie, but Conn picked up the rebound for the score in the 77th minute.

Gustavus got what would prove to be the game-winning-goal four minutes later on Cartony's second marker of the game. The home team put the game out of reach with less than three minutes remaining on a goal by Coursey Edwards.

Shots on the day were even, with Gustavus getting off 19 shots and Stout 18. Both teams put 10 shots on net. Paige Meyer (So, River Falls) recorded the loss in relief, allowing the final two goals. Robbie Shelby (Jr, La Crosse) left with the score tied after 49 minutes. Both Stout goalies recorded three saves apiece. Gustavus' Caroline Olson got the win by making eight saves.

Stout will host Bethel University, Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m., then will head to Springfield, Mass., to play Springfield College, Friday, Sept. 6 and Roger Williams College Saturday, Sept. 7.
