WINONA, Minn. (August 30, 2013) - Twice the UW-Stout volleyball team had to go five sets to pull out a pair of wins at the St. Mary's University sponsored Sugar Loaf Invitational Friday.
With their first match scheduled for 6 p.m. with the College of St. Catherine, the Blue Devils went well after 11 p.m. to finish off Gustavus Adolphus. Stout defeated St. Catherine 17-25, 25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 21-19 and Gustavus 22-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-10.
Against the Gusties, the Blue Devils fell behind 2-0 before coming back to take the final three sets.
Laura Reiter (So, Lino Lakes, Minn ) had a career-best 19 kills to pace Stout over Gustavus.
Morgan Denny (Jr, Luck) had 12 kills while
Rachel Tschumperlin (So, Fairmont, Minn) finished with 10 kills.
Karley Wiensch (Jr, Chippewa Falls) had 43 assists and five service aces.
Nicole Bradford (Jr, Ridgeland) had 23 digs.
Against the Wildcats, Stout not only needed to go five sets, they needed extra frames in the final set, going out to 21 points to win. Reiter led Stout with 16 kills, while Tschumperlin had 15, Denny 12 and
Molly Brion (So, Cameron) 11. Wiensch finished with 56 assists and three service aces. Wiensch was selected to the all-tournament team.
The wins makes Stout 2-0 to start off the season. Stout returns to action Sept. 6-7 at the Macalester College Invitational
