MENOMONIE (November 5, 2013) - Paige Meyer (So, Beldenville) perched like a cat ready to pounce.

And pounce she did. When UW-La Crosse's Kara Bednarek sent a shot for the upper part of the net, Meyer shot up and punched the ball up and over the net to help preserve a 1-0 UW-Stout lead in the quarterfinals of the WIAC Women's Soccer Tournament Tuesday at Nelson Field. Stout went on to take a 1-0 victory.

Meyer preserved the win the final 14 minutes of the game, knocking down or grabbing four La Crosse shots heading fo the back of the net, three of them within less than a four minute span.

After a scoreless first half, Stout (8-9-1) got the break it needed 15 minutes into the second half when Lauren Kizlik (Fr, Hammond) found Alix Hyduke (Sr, Duluth, Minn), who buried the shot.

The Stout defense did the rest, keeping the Eagles (6-11-1) out of the net. Meyer ended the night with eight saves. The Eagles' Ashley Tracy had four saves.

The win sent the Blue Devils on to the second round of the WIAC tournament for only the second time in school history. Stout, the third seed in the tournament, will travel to UW-Oshkosh, thursday, Nov. 7 for a 6 p.m. meeting with the Titans. Stout's last win in the tournament came during the 2005 season, a 2-1 overtime win over La Crosse.
