Volleyball Preview: Stout to host Whitewater, Oshkosh this weekend


THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (12-6, 0-2 WIAC) will host UW-Whitewater (16-5, 1-1 WIAC), Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. and UW-Oshkosh (11-5, 2-1 WIAC), Saturday, Oct. 5 at noon.

ON-LINE: Friday's match with UW-Whitewater will be available in a live video stream.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS: For the sixth straight season, Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's volleyball teams will participate in promotions to support Breast Cancer Awareness. Each of the nine WIAC teams will be involved in at least one promotional event throughout the month of October.  Over the past five seasons, conference volleyball programs have raised an amazing $113,037 in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The Blue Devils will pass the bucket through the crowd tonight to raise funds that will go the American Cancer Society and pink t-shirts are on sale.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT:  The Blue Devils lost a 3-2 heartbreaker at UW-Superior on Wednesday, Oct. 2.  The Yellowjackets (14-5, 1-3 WIAC) captured the first two sets, 25-19, 25-21, but Stout (12-6, 0-2 WIAC) came back to take the next two sets, 25-23, 25-16, before Superior took the match with a 15-11 finale.  Karley Wiensch (Jr, Chippewa Falls) collected 45 assists and 10 digs.  Laura Reiter (So, Lino Lakes, Minn) notched 16 kills.  Morgan Denny (Jr, Luck) added 13 kills of her own.  | UW-Superior 3, UW-Stout 2

A LOOK AT STOUT: UW-Stout currently holds a 12-6 record.  Laura Reiter leads the Blue Devils with 219 kills on the year, good for an average to 3.32 a game.  Karley Wiensch has 691 assists on the season.  The defense is led by Molly Brion (So, Cameron) and her 222 digs on the season, an average of 3.22 a game.  Stout leads their opponents in several statistical categories including kills, assists, digs, and blocks.  Karley Wiensch was named to the Sugar Loaf Invitational all tournament team after collecting 99 assists in the first two matches of the season.  She followed that up by being named to the Macalaster College all tournament team the following weekend.  Wiensch was also named to the Wheaton Invitational all tournament team.  Laura Reiter was named to the St. Catherine Invitational all tournament team.  The 2013 roster has zero seniors, but juniors Emily Crew, Morgan Denny and Karley Wiensch have started since their freshmen years.  | 2013 Stats

A LOOK AT UW-WHITEWATER:  The Warhawks, picked to win the 2013 WIAC title by their peers, are ranked 17th in the most recent AVCA national poll.  Whitewater is 16-5 on the season and has a 1-1 conference record.  The Warhawks lead the WIAC in assists and kills.  They are second in blocks as well as third in hitting percentage.  Ariel Feiertag's 205 kills lead the team.  Kim Frei leads the conference with 738 assists.  Alivia Holman's 105 total blocks are also tops in the conference.    | 2013 Stats

LAST TIME THEY MET:  The Warhawks and Blue Devils met on Oct. 27, 2012 in Whitewater.  The Warhawks handed the Blue Devils a 3-0 defeat.  Whitewater leads the all time series 37-2.  | UW-Whitewater 3, UW-Stout 0

A LOOK AT UW-OSHKOSH:  The Titans are coming off of their first loss in the last 11 matches, a 3-0 defeat by UW-Stevens Point.  Oshkosh had won ten straight matches, marking their longest win streak since 2009.  Oshkosh currently leads all WIAC members in hitting percentage at .234.  The Titan attack is led by Katelyn Malcheski's 144 kills.  Alison Tomczyk leads Oshkosh with 312 assists.  Defensively the Titans are led by Nerissa Vogt and her 56 total blocks.  The Titans will travel to UW-River Falls before facing the Blue Devils.  | 2013 Stats  

LAST TIME THEY MET:  The Blue Devils and Titans last played on Oct. 26, 2012.  Oshkosh beat the Blue Devils 3-0.  Oshkosh leads the all time series 36-6.  | Box score

UW-STOUT COACH JILL JOLLIFF: Coach Jill Jolliff (360-310) is in her 21st season with the Blue Devils and has the most wins of any UW-Stout volleyball coach. 

QUICK HITS:   Stout started the season 9-4 which is the best start since 2009 when they opened up 8-5...Last season, Stout more than doubled their wins total from the previous year...as a freshman last season, Molly Brion was selected as the WIAC Athlete of the Week after averaging nearly four kills per set in three matches in mid-September...Morgan Denny's hitting percentage of .265 was the best by a Blue Devil since Maggie Meixl finished at .280 in 2008...UW-Oshkosh has lost just once in their last 11 matches...UW-Whitewater is currently ranked 17th in the AVCA national poll...

AWARDS: Karley Wiensch was selected to the all-tournament team at the Macalester College Invitational...Karley Wiensch was named to the all-tournament team at St. Mary's University in the season opener...Laura Reiter was named to the all-tournament team at the St. Catherine University tournament.  Karley Wiensch was named to the all-tournament team at the Wheaton Invitational.  Karley Wiensch was named the Northwestern Mutual UW-Stout athlete of the week for her play at the Wheaton Invitational. 

DOWN THE ROAD:  The Blue Devils will be at the UW- Eau Claire Tournament on Friday Oct. 11 and Saturday Oct. 12.  They will face UW-La Crosse and Gustavus Adolphus on Friday, before playing UM-Morris and Augsburg College on Saturday.
