Volleyball Preview: Blue Devils off to River Falls, then take southern trip



THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (13-12, 1-4 WIAC) will close out the conference portion of the schedule with three contest. Stout will be at UW-River Falls (15-11, 2-3 WIAC), Wednesday, Oct. 23, then will travel to UW-La Crosse (11-11, 3-2 WIAC), Friday, Oct. 25 and to UW-Platteville (13-15, 1-4 WIAC), Saturday, Oct. 26..

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT:  Stout suffered a 3-0 defeat to Eau Claire on Oct. 16, 2013 in Menomonie.  The Blue Devils showed an ability to battle back before eventually dropping all three sets by scores of, 27-25, 25-17 and 25-20.  In the opening set, Stout trailed by as much as 11-5, but made a comeback and Alyssa Hofacker's (So, Appleton) back-to-back service aces made the score 20-20. The set was never separated by more than two points the rest of the way.  Stout fell behind in the second set, but couldn't recover as well as in the first set. In set three, Stout fell behind, but tied the score at 19-19 before Eau Claire rolled off six of the next seven points.  Stout was led by Emily Crew (Jr, Maplewood, Minn) with nine kils.

A LOOK AT STOUT: UW-Stout currently holds a 13-12 record.  The Blue Devils are still in contention for one of the final playoff spots.  Laura Reiter leads the Blue Devils with 286 kills on the year, good for an average of 3.14 a set. Morgan Denny has 219 kills (2.41), Rachel Tschumperlin 151 (1.68) and Molly Brion 148 (1.57).  Karley Wiensch has 923 assists.  The defense is led by Molly Brion and her 296 digs on the season, an average of 3.15 a game.  Stout leads their opponents in several statistical categories including kills, assists, solo blocks and digs.  Karley Wiensch was named to the Sugar Loaf Invitational all tournament team after collecting 99 assists in the first two matches of the season.  She followed that up by being named to the Macalaster College all tournament team the following weekend.  Wiensch was also named to the Wheaton Invitational all tournament team.  Laura Reiter was named to the St. Catherine Invitational all tournament team.  The 2013 roster has zero seniors, but juniors Emily Crew, Morgan Denny and Karley Wiensch have started since their freshmen years.   | 2013 Stats

A LOOK AT UW-RIVER FALLS:  The Falcons are currently 15-11 overall and 2-3 in the WIAC.  If the season ended today their 2-3 conference record would earn them the sixth seed in the conference tournament.  The Falcons alternated wins and losses on Oct. 18, and 19 at the Loras tournament.  They beat both Luther College, and William Penn University while losing to Loras College and Wheaton College. River Falls is currently second in the conference in opponents hitting percentage (.134) and service aces per set (1.66).  Jean Theis leads the Falcons with 250 kills and 79 total blocks.  Raven Kline's 446 assists are tops on the team.  Hali Tasler leads River Falls with 33 service aces.  | 2013 Stats

LAST TIME THEY MET:  The Falcons and Blue Devils met on Oct. 10, 2012 in Menomonie.  Stout fell behind 0-2 won sets three and four, before dropping the final set and the match.  | Story and Box Score

A LOOK AT UW-LA CROSSE:  The Eagles are currently 11-11 overall and 3-2 in the WIAC.  The 3-2 conference record puts them in 5th place in the standings, making them one of the teams Stout needs to pass in the playoff chase.  La Crosse leads the WIAC with an average of 12.10 assist per set.  The Eagles also lead the league in kills (13.00 per set).  Cassie Raduka leads the WIAC in assists per set (10.85).  Lauren Probst's 252 kills lead the team.  Kayla Ashland leads the defense with 84 total blocks.  La Crosse will face UW-Oshkosh before their match with the Blue Devils.  | 2013 Stats

LAST TIME THEY MET:  The Eagles and Blue Devils faced each other once already this season, on Oct. 11, 2013 at the Eau Claire tournament.  La Crosse defeated Stout 3-0.  | Story and Box Score

A LOOK AT UW-PLATTEVILLE:  Platteville is currently 13-15 overall and 1-4 in the WIAC.  The Pioneers are tied with the Blue Devils in the standings.  Platteville has won their last two matches. Stephanie Kirchner's .319 hitting percentage puts her currently in second in the WIAC.  Jennifer Schmidt leads the team with 276 kills.  Katie O'Malley's 746 assists are tops on the team.  Lidia Frias leads the Pioneer defense with 64 total blocks.  Platteville will play River Falls before hosting the Blue Devils.  | 2013 Stats  

LAST TIME THEY MET:  The Pioneers and Blue Devils last played on Sept. 21, 2012 in Menomonie.  Stout defeated Platteville 3-1.  | Story and Box Score

UW-STOUT COACH JILL JOLLIFF: Coach Jill Jolliff (361-316) is in her 21st season with the Blue Devils and has the most wins of any UW-Stout volleyball coach. 

QUICK HITS:   Stout started the season 9-4 which is the best start since 2009 when they opened up 8-5...Last season, Stout more than doubled their wins total from the previous year...as a freshman last season, Molly Brion was selected as the WIAC Athlete of the Week after averaging nearly four kills per set in three matches in mid-September...Morgan Denny's hitting percentage of .265 was the best by a Blue Devil since Maggie Meixl finished at .280 in 2008...La Crosse and River Falls both sit ahead of Stout in the WIAC standings and playoff picture. 

AWARDS: Karley Wiensch was selected to the all-tournament team at the Macalester College Invitational...Karley Wiensch was named to the all-tournament team at St. Mary's University in the season opener...Laura Reiter was named to the all-tournament team at the St. Catherine University tournament.  Karley Wiensch was named to the all-tournament team at the Wheaton Invitational.  Karley Wiensch was named the Northwestern Mutual UW-Stout athlete of the week for her play at the Wheaton Invitational. 

DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils will travel to Hamline University, Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 5:30 p.m. and will also meet North Central University at 7:30 p.m.
