MENOMONIE (September 21, 2012) - Whether it was Rachel Tschumperlin (Fr, Fairmont, Minn) teaming up with Morgan Denny (So, Luck) or Emily Crew (So, Maplewood, Minn) combining for big blocks, Kate Mikutowski (Sr, Stillwater, Minn) putting down a set winning kill, Megan Shanahan (Sr, Norwood-Young America, Minn) retrieving deep passes off the base line, Gabby Mastronardo (Fr, Germantown) digging a ball out near the bleachers, Nicole Bradford (So, Ridgeland) twice on the same play making a tough dig on a monster attack or simply Molly Brion (Fr, Cameron) putting down kill after kill, the UW-Stout volleyball team was firing on all cylinders as they defeated UW-Platteville 3-1 Friday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (7-8, 1-1 WIAC) played inspired ball all evening with Brion leading the way with 22 kills, the most kills by a Stout player since Linda Meyer had 26 in 2007. Brion seemingly placed attacks at will, by far exceeding her collegiate single match best in her young career.

Tschumperlin, Denny and Crew played tough at the net, with Tschumperlin recording six block assists, Crew five and Denny three. The trio paired up for the majority of their defensive gems.

The Blue Devils won the first game, 25-17, but Platteville came back for a 27-25 second set win. In game three, Stout came back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the set at 15-15, then slowing pulled away and Mikutowski put down the game-winner.

In game four, Platteville (10-4, 1-1) came back from a 15-10 deficit to tie the game at 15 apiece. Bradford stifled some of Platteville's fire power when on the same play, she dug out two hard-hit balls to keep the ball in play. The set stayed close, never separated by more than the final two point margin and Tschumperlin and Crew combined for the final point on a block.

The win was Stout's first over Platteville since Sept. 18, 2004, when the Blue Devils also took a 3-1 win in Johnson Fieldhouse.

Brion hit at a .477 clip, recording only one error in 44 attack attempts. Morgan Denny (So, Luck) added 10 kills and had two block solos and three block assists. Kayla Wiensch (So, Chippewa Falls) had 42 assists and 13 digs. Shanahan finished the night with 22 digs. Mikutowski had nine kills and 15 digs.

For the Pioneers, Stephanie Kirchner finished with 14 kills, while Danielle Cushley had eight.

Stout will host UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Sept. 22 at noon.
