After winning first set, Stout falls in WIAC Quarterfinal match

EAU CLAIRE (October 30, 2012) - UW-Stout won the first set, but UW-Eau Claire came back to take the next three on their way to a 3-1 win over the Blue Devils in the quarterfinals of the WIAC Volleyball Tournament, Tuesday.

The Blue Devils (15-14) took the first set, 25-20, but the Blugolds (23-11) came back to take the match, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20, to put an end to Stout's season.

Both UW-Stout seniors - Kate Mikutowski (Stillwater, Minn) and Megan Shanahan (Norwood-Young America, Minn) - wrapped up their career with solid games. Mikutowski finished with 14 kills to run her career kills total to 1048, along with 12 digs, bringing her digs total to 1021. Shanahan breeched the millennial mark in digs with 14 to run her career total to 1003.

The Blue Devils finished with four solo blocks, two apiece by Laura Reiter (So, Lino Lake, Minn) and Emily Crew (So, Maplewood, Minn). Morgan Denny (So, Luck) had three block assists.

The Blugolds got double kills from Amy Bomgren (16), Kelly Schuh (11) and Tessa Snell (10). Anne Satterlee and Snell each had five block assists and Eau Claire finished with 16. The Blugolds advance to the semi-finals of the WIAC Tournament at UW-Stevens Point and will face UW-Whitewater, Friday, Nov. 2.

Picked to finish eighth in the WIAC preseason poll, the Blue Devils finished as the sixth seed in the tournament, tripling their number of wins from last year.
